Mukesh Ambani Demands AI Self-Reliance: Reliance Pledges Mega Bets to Make India the Global Creator of Technology

reliance Industries Chairman and Managing Director Mukesh Ambani has laid out an ambitious vision for the nation's technological trajectory, asserting that India must move beyond being a consumer of artificial intelligence. Speaking at the company's 49th annual general meeting, Ambani stressed that AI self-sufficiency and energy independence should be designated as critical national missions for India.

Ambani stated firmly that India cannot afford to remain merely a recipient of AI technology developed abroad. He asserted that the nation must evolve into a global leader, adopter, and creator within the domain of artificial intelligence. This focus underscores Reliance's strategic intent to position AI at the heart of its digital expansion phase.

##Reliance Intelligence: Executing the Quest for Digital Sovereignty

Ambani revealed that Reliance Intelligence, launched last year as a key growth engine, is now entering a crucial execution phase. The objective of this business unit is to establish and scale a profitable artificial intelligence infrastructure and service platform across India.

He further emphasized the scope of the initiative, stating that engineers within Reliance Intelligence will be tasked with solving monumental challenges at a national scale. Ambani committed, "We will give you the scale, resources and freedom to solve the most important challenges of our age." This commitment is rooted in a broader push for intensified self-reliance across critical technologies.

##Jio and Retail: Pillars of Reliance's Growth Engine

The CEO highlighted that Jio has celebrated 10 years, solidifying its role as a primary enabler of India’s AI and digital revolution. Similarly, Reliance Retail marked 20 years, establishing itself as a major catalyst for the organized retail sector in the country.

Ambani declared confidence in these business verticals, stating that "In both businesses, we remain the unbeatable number one." He provided financial context, noting that the retail and digital businesses now contribute nearly half of Reliance Industries' EBITDA to the group’s earnings mix.

##Financial Performance and Strategic Investments

The company reported strong financial results for FY26, with Ambani reporting record levels across key metrics. Reliance’s revenue crossed ₹11.75 lakh crore in FY26. Furthermore, the Earnings Before Interest, Taxes, Depreciation, and Amortization (EBITDA) doubled over five years, reaching ₹2.08 lakh crore.

The company invested significantly in infrastructure, with its Capital Expenditure (capex) standing at ₹1.44 lakh crore in FY26. Over the past five years, Reliance committed a total of ₹6.48 lakh crore towards capex. These investments underline Reliance's deep commitment to digital and advanced manufacturing.

##Global Partnerships and National Policy Alignment

The push for domestic AI capacity aligns closely with broader national policy shifts. The government itself launched the IndiaAI Mission in March 2024, allocating ₹10,372 crore to foster the country’s complete AI ecosystem. This mission focuses on areas such as common compute access, startup financing, and indigenous data sets.

Reliance has actively sought global partnerships to build this infrastructure locally. In a significant move, Reliance Industries collaborated with Nvidia in 2023 to co-develop AI supercomputing infrastructure within India. This collaboration includes developing large language models specifically trained on Indian languages.
