Market Plummets Amid Oil Surge: Sensex, Nifty Slip on Geopolitical Fears—What’s Next for Bulls?
The Indian equity markets registered a significant downturn on Tuesday as rising global oil prices intensified concerns over Middle East tensions. The volatility was reflected across major indices as investors reacted cautiously to the confluence of geopolitical risk and commodity price hikes.Market Performance and Sectoral Shifts
The benchmark Sensex fell by over 300 points, settling at 78,215, while Nifty 50 dipped below 24,550, marking a slip exceeding 50 points as recorded around 9:25 am. Despite this decline in blue-chip stocks, broader market segments demonstrated resilience. Both the Nifty Midcap 100 and Nifty Smallcap 100 indices managed to gain up to 0.4%, suggesting underlying strength outside of mega-caps.The overall daily market breadth remained slightly positive across NSE, with 1,373 stocks recording advances compared to 1,169 declines, while 119 stocks remained unchanged. Sector performance was mixed; the Nifty IT index gained nearly 1%, contrasting sharply with losses in banking. The Nifty PSU Bank and Nifty Private Bank indices registered declines of between 0.5% and 0.7%.
Stock Movers and Key Financial Trends
Several key industry names saw significant downside pressure on the Sensex. IndiGo, Bajaj Finance, and Bharti Airtel led the fall among top losers, each dropping by 1-2%. Other large caps that followed the downward trend included UltraTech Cement, Axis Bank, SBI, Reliance Industries, Kotak Mahindra Bank, and Sun Pharma, all of which dropped close to 1%.In contrast, HCLTech, Tech Mahindra, and Titan stocks showed strength, with each gaining more than 1% in trading. This rotation suggests specific sectors are outperforming the broader downturn caused by oil price movements.
Analyst Outlook: FII Inflows Anchor Market Resilience
Despite the immediate market wobble induced by Brent crude prices, analysts maintain a resilient outlook for Dalal Street, buoyed by strong financial fundamentals and foreign investment activity. VK Vijayakumar, Chief Investment Strategist at Geojit Investments, pointed out that Foreign Institutional Investors (FIIs) have pivoted to become buyers in the Indian market. This FII interest is driven by better-than-expected Q1 results and the stability of the rupee. The analyst suggested these positives provide a solid foundation for the market, maintaining a slight upward bias potential through FY27 due to robust domestic consumption. Importantly, FIIs are reportedly diversifying their investments into expensive stocks across sectors like telecom, renewable energy, capital goods, and pharmaceuticals, rather than focusing on banking majors.
Technical View: Nifty Consolidation Awaits Breakout
From a technical perspective, the path for Nifty 50 remains range-bound until a critical resistance level is decisively breached, notes Rupak De, Senior Technical Analyst at LKP Securities. The index has maintained its position above the short-term 50 EMA, indicating a generally sideways to positive near-to-short term trend. The daily RSI indicates a bullish crossover. Analysts point to 24,650 as a key resistance level; a decisive move beyond this point could trigger a sustained rally in the market. Conversely, support is identified at 24,500. A breach below this lower bound risks intensifying weakness until such a breakthrough occurs.
