Sensex Plummets as Oil Prices Surge Past $96 Amid Heightened Iran-US Tensions

The Indian stock market extended its downward trend for the fourth consecutive session, with major indices sinking amid heightened geopolitical tensions between the US and Iran. The decline was heavily influenced by soaring crude oil prices following a reported escalation of military strikes.

Sensex closed at 76,515, declining approximately 240 points. Nifty 50 fell more than 91 points to settle at 23,905. Broader market indices also saw losses, with Nifty Midcap 100 and Nifty Smallcap 100 indices falling up to 0.3%.

Stock Markets Rally Down Amid Escalating Geopolitical Crisis

The day's bearish sentiment was pervasive across the board. Out of all sectoral indices, three showed significant weakness: Nifty Pharma, Nifty Private Bank, and Nifty Oil & Gas each fell nearly 1%. The broader market saw a imbalance in activity, registering 1,456 declines against 695 advances.

Stocks that led losses on the Sensex included UltraTech Cement, IndiGo, Asian Paints, Reliance Industries (RIL), Infosys, and Mahindra & Mahindra (M&M), all falling around 1% each. In stark contrast to this trend, Eternal shares were noted as a bright spot, soaring by 3%.

Iran-US Conflict Drives Crude Prices Past $96 Mark

The escalation was precipitated by the US military completing what it described as its 12th successive night of strikes against Iranian military targets. The US Central Command stated that U.S. forces struck various sites in Iran, including missile and drone storage facilities and coastal surveillance areas.

Simultaneously, Iran’s Revolutionary Guards reported an incident involving an oil tanker catching fire after an explosion while navigating a supposed mined route south of the Strait of Hormuz. This conflict dynamic has pushed global energy prices upward significantly.

Oil Prices Spike Amid Geopolitical Tensions

As a direct result of the latest escalations, oil prices rose more than 2%. Brent crude futures crossed $96 per barrel, nearing the crucial $100 mark. WTI Crude futures were trading above $88 per barrel as the threat level intensified in West Asia.

Analysts Warn of Sustained Bearish Sentiment in Indian Equities

VK Vijayakumar, Chief Investment Strategist at Geojit Investments, noted that the Houthi’s involvement and subsequent actions are significantly aggravating the West Asia crisis, driving Brent crude higher. He warned that when Brent trades above $95, it exerts a substantial sentimental impact on the Indian market.

The analyst added that India's vulnerability to high oil prices is fast becoming a macroeconomic concern, suggesting this negative sentiment will keep stock prices largely subdued for now. However, he provided silver linings for long-term investors, pointing out opportunities to accumulate quality stocks in growth segments at attractive valuations. Banking stocks were specifically highlighted as being attractively valued due to strong credit growth and low NPAs.

Technical Outlook Highlights Key Resistance Points

From a technical standpoint, Anand James, Chief Market Strategist at Geojit Investments, advised caution regarding Nifty's inability to sustain itself above key pivots. While an outright collapse is not immediately anticipated, he noted that 23,750 remains an exposed level for the index. Intermittent upswings are possible, but they would need to push past 24,000 to confirm directional strength.
