Sensex Plummets Amid Oil Price Surge as Geopolitical Tensions Hold Market Sentiment in Check

Stock benchmarks faced a challenging session on July 21, with both the Sensex and Nifty trading lower due to elevated energy costs and significant concerns surrounding key banking stocks. The overall market decline was partly driven by global geopolitical tensions and the ongoing volatility in crude oil markets.

At 10:55 am, the Sensex stood at 77,455.89, registering a drop of 252.63 points or 0.33%. The Nifty tracked closely, trading at 24,174.60, down by 63.9 points or 0.26%. Approximately 1,729 shares advanced while 1,725 shares declined, with 187 remaining unchanged.

Crude Oil Spike and Global Geopolitical Risks Weigh on Markets

A major factor fueling the market weakness is the rise in crude oil prices. Brent hovered around $90 a barrel as investors digested reports concerning US-Iran mediation against ongoing Houthi threats to Saudi Arabia's blockade.

Higher energy costs pose particular risks for India, which serves as the world's third largest crude importer. Such a scenario can potentially exacerbate inflation and widen the trade deficit, exerting pressure on corporate margins across sectors.

Ponmudi R, chief executive of Enrich Money, stated that the combination of elevated energy prices and lingering Middle East tensions keeps risk appetite subdued. He added that sentiment is likely to remain cautious until greater clarity emerges from the geopolitical front, despite opportunities presented by selective corporate earnings.

Foreign Outflows Contrast Domestic Institutional Buying

Reviewing portfolio flows, provisional NSE data indicates a divergence between international and domestic investors. Foreign Portfolio Investors (FPI) sold Indian equities worth Rs 1,121 crore on Monday.

Conversely, Domestic Institutional Investors (DII) showed strong buying momentum, injecting shares valued at 13.12 billion rupees into the market. The inflow from DIIs provided some support amid global volatility.

Technical Viewpoints Highlight Critical Support and Resistance Levels

Analysts maintain a cautionary stance, suggesting that persistent market weakness may continue until the Nifty decisively crosses the 24,250 level.

Bajaj Broking Research noted that maintaining levels above the critical support area of 24,100 is crucial. A breakout past last week's high would signal further upside potential towards 24,450 and 24,530, which serve as trendline resistance and current month highs respectively.

Short-term support is mapped at the confluence zone of 24,000 to 23,800. This range represents both the lowest point over the past five weeks and aligns with the 50 days EMA.

HDFC Bank Decline Sparks Investor Concern

The banking sector saw turbulence as the heaviest stock on the benchmarks, HDFC Bank, fell by 1.3% in current trading. The bank had experienced a steeper decline of 5.1% on Monday.

This drop follows reports that cited its disappointing June quarter margins. Furthermore, Reuters reported citing sources that the lender is awaiting an additional review by independent directors before the Reserve Bank of India recommends CEO Sashidhar Jagdishan's reappointment.
