Tata Power Secures Landmark 324 MW Pumped Hydro Deal from SECI, Bolstering India's Energy Storage Future

Tata Power has achieved a significant milestone in the push for sustainable energy integration. The company announced on Monday that it has been awarded a Letter of Award (LoA) by the Solar Energy Corporation of India Ltd (SECI). This deal secures Tata Power's role as a major provider of long-duration power storage within the country.

The LoA pertains to the supply of 324 MW of power, drawn from Tata Power’s 1,000 MW Pumped Hydro Storage Project (PSP) located in Bhivpuri, Maharashtra. This strategic contract underscores the growing demand for reliable, dispatchable green energy sources.

PSP Project Details and Contractual Framework

The project was awarded through SECI's tariff-based global competitive bidding process. This initiative was specifically aimed at procuring power from various pumped hydro storage projects being established across India.

Tata Power has secured a substantial 40-year Pumped Storage Purchase (PSP) agreement for the facility. The PSP is scheduled for commissioning by 2029. It will operate under a Build, Own, Operate (BOO) model structure. This project provides an essential mechanism to store energy, enabling reliable electricity supply during periods of peak demand.

Strengthening Grid Resilience with Long-Duration Storage

The SECI award significantly reinforces Tata Power's leadership in the long-duration energy storage segment. This area is critical for seamlessly integrating India's rapidly expanding solar and wind capacity into the national grid.

By converting surplus daytime generation into firm, dispatchable power, pumped hydro storage ensures grid stability. The project will be connected to the 765/400 kV South Kalamb Central Transmission Utility (CTU) Substation via the Inter-State Transmission System (ISTS). This commitment aligns perfectly with Tata Power's overarching Net Zero 2045 ambition and its broader clean-energy strategy.

Tata Power’s Diverse Renewable Energy Portfolio

The successful project further highlights the strength and diversification of the Tata Group company. Tata Power, a vertically integrated power provider, boasts an extensive portfolio across the entire power value chain.

The company currently maintains a clean and green portfolio standing at 17.5 GW. This includes a substantial 9.6 GW pipeline within its renewable assets. Of this pipeline capacity is dedicated to pumped storage technologies, totaling 2.8 GW. Furthermore, Tata Power has approximately 8.9 GW of thermal generation capacity in its operational pipeline.

Overall, the company’s total operational and pipeline capacity exceeds 26 GW. This balanced mix of green energy, storage solutions, and traditional power ensures a resilient and robust future for India's energy supply.
