Cabinet Greenlights Massive Ganga Elevated Corridor for Varanasi

The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs, chaired by the Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi, has given approval for a transformative infrastructure project aimed at decongesting Varanasi city. This initiative involves developing a Link/Connector Corridor between National Highway-19 (NH-19) and the Varanasi Ring Road, along with riverbank connectivity adjacent to the River Ganga.

The high-impact project spans 46.039 km and will be implemented under the Hybrid Annuity Model (HAM). The total capital cost for the corridor has been set at Rs.14,447.64 crore. This figure includes a civil construction cost of Rs.6,037.85 crore and a land acquisition cost amounting to Rs.541.11 crore under NH(O).

Project Scope and Landmark Engineering Features

The corridor is designed as a comprehensive transportation solution, featuring a six-lane elevated main carriageway. Key elements include an iconic cable-stayed bridge and a 1.32 km extradosed Foot Over Bridge-cum-Major Bridge which features travelators. This structure aims to provide seamless pedestrian connectivity directly to the Kashi Vishwanath Temple.

The project scope also encompasses various ancillary infrastructure, such as loops, ramps, link roads, and service roads. The planning incorporates architectural elements inspired by Varanasi’s cultural heritage, alongside noise barriers and façade lighting, ensuring the corridor becomes an iconic addition to the city's skyline. A dedicated elevated spur between Samne Ghat and BHU/Lanka is also planned to ease traffic at Lanka Junction.

Transforming Urban Mobility and Reducing Travel Time

This sophisticated project aims to dramatically improve urban mobility within Varanasi. By providing controlled-access movement, it will significantly decongest the existing road network. Current estimates suggest that the average travel time across the project influence area could be reduced from approximately 60 minutes down to 20 minutes, representing a nearly 67 per cent reduction.

Furthermore, travel time between NH-19 and Kashi Railway Station is expected to decrease substantially, dropping from around 50 minutes to about 25 minutes—a saving of roughly 50 per cent. The controlled access movement will also improve road safety and reduce vehicle operating costs and emissions across the region.

Strategic Connectivity and Economic Upliftment

Aligned with the PM Gati Shakti National Master Plan, this corridor is designed to strengthen multimodal connectivity in Eastern Uttar Pradesh. It connects several major economic and social nodes within Varanasi and Chandauli. These include the Chandauli SEZ (Economic Node) and various logistics hubs such as Lal Bahadur Shastri Airport, Kashi Railway Station, Ramnagar IWAI Port, and Banaras Railway Station.

The project is set to boost tourism and pilgrimage infrastructure significantly. With over 15 crore tourists and pilgrims visiting Varanasi annually, improved connectivity to key sites like the Kashi Vishwanath Temple, Namo Ghat, and Ramnagar Fort will be crucial. It will also facilitate access to educational institutions such as Banaras Hindu University (BHU).

Enhancing Regional Logistics and Pilgrimage Access

Beyond urban decongestion, the corridor is designed to enhance regional logistics efficiency. By linking multiple transport hubs—including railway stations, airport, and the Ramnagar IWAI Port—it creates a seamless system for passenger and freight movement. The infrastructure will support sustainable economic growth across eastern Uttar Pradesh by efficiently connecting critical social and logistical destinations.

The Ganga Elevated Corridor promises to be more than just an infrastructural upgrade; it is a commitment to transforming mobility in Varanasi. It reinforces the city's position as a major religious and cultural destination while providing high-capacity, reliable connectivity in line with national development visions.
