Varanasi Decongestion Project Breaks Ground: Cabinet Approves Rs.10,998 Crore Elevated Corridor to Revolutionize Connectivity

Cabinet Approves Major 43km Link Corridor for Varanasi Decongestion Plan

The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs, chaired by Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi, has approved the development of a crucial infrastructure link corridor in Uttar Pradesh. This project is designed to significantly decongest the complex road network of Varanasi city. The corridor measures 43.218 km and will run along the Varuna River connecting NH-31 with the Varanasi Ring Road.

The initiative involves constructing a 6/4-lane predominantly elevated corridor, which includes all necessary infrastructure such as flyovers, loops, ramps, and service roads. National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) will implement this project under the Hybrid Annuity Model (HAM). The total capital cost for the entire undertaking has been set at Rs.10,998.32 crore.

Financial Breakdown and Project Scope

The approved capital outlay is broken down into specific components necessary for the execution of this massive urban transit project. Civil construction costs are estimated at Rs.4,565.33 crore. A significant component allocated to land acquisition alone amounts to Rs.934.91 crore.

This corridor represents a vital piece of the broader Varanasi Decongestion Plan. It is engineered to establish seamless high-speed connectivity between NH-31 and Kashi Railway Station. The project will drastically improve access points across the entire region.

Enhancing Mobility and Safety in Varanasi City

The elevated corridor promises substantial improvements in passenger and freight movement within and around Varanasi. Currently, travel time between NH-31 and Kashi Railway Station averages approximately 40 minutes. With the completion of the project, this time is expected to be reduced to just 20 minutes, marking a nearly 50 per cent reduction.

Beyond transportation, the project will boost local economic efficiency. It is set to improve access to multiple key urban centers and infrastructure points. These include Varanasi Airport, Kashi Railway Station, Varanasi City Railway Station, Varanasi Junction, and Deen Dayal Upadhyaya Junction.

Strengthening Regional Economic Integration

The corridor is far more than just a road upgrade; it serves as a pillar of regional economic strengthening. It will boost connectivity to one designated Economic Node (Chandauli Social Economic Zone). It also facilitates access to six major Logistics Nodes across the region.

By improving logistical efficiency, the project aims to facilitate faster movement of agricultural produce and industrial goods. This infrastructure push supports sustainable economic growth and enhances multimodal integration in line with the PM Gati Shakti National Master Plan. The improved access is expected to benefit residents and visitors alike.
