Unemployment Rate Holds Steady as Female Labour Force Participation Falls to Lowest Level in a Year
India's unemployment rate remained unchanged at 5.5 percent in June, according to the latest Periodic Labour Force Survey (PLFS) released by the National Statistics Office (NSO). This stability comes despite a significant moderation in female labour force participation, which declined marginally to reach its lowest level since June 2025.The overall labour force participation rate (LFPR) for individuals aged 15 years and above stood at 54.4 percent in June. This reflects a marginal improvement compared to the 54.2 percent recorded one year ago, though it signals continued pressure on labor market dynamics across regions. The worker population ratio (WPR) also remained steady at 51.4 percent during the survey period.
Decline in Female Labour Force Participation Drives Concern
Female labour force participation registered a decline to 32.7 percent in June from 32.8 percent recorded in May. This figure marks its lowest level since June 2025, following a peak of 35.3 percent achieved in January 2026. The moderation trend has been observed throughout the year for female workers. The decline in participation was particularly pronounced in rural India, where the female LFPR slipped to 36.6 percent from 36.7 percent in May. In contrast, urban female participation held steady at 24.8 percent. Despite this sequential drop, it must be noted that female labour force participation remains 0.7 percentage points higher than it was one year ago.
Mixed Trends Emerge Across Urban and Rural Labour Markets
The labour market presented a mixed picture when examining regional trends. Urban labour force participation saw an improvement, rising to 50.1 percent in June from 49.8 percent recorded in May. Similarly, the urban worker population ratio climbed to 46.8 percent from 46.6 percent, suggesting signs of stronger employment generation within city centers. On the flip side, rural conditions showed marginal improvement on the unemployment front. The rural unemployment rate eased down to 5.0 percent from 5.1 percent in May, following a continuous upward trend observed since February. Meanwhile, urban unemployment increased to 6.6 percent from 6.4 percent, though this figure remains below last year's urban record of 7.1 percent.
Male Employment Indicators Show Strengthening Signs
Male employment indicators displayed notable strengthening during the month of June. The male worker population ratio rose significantly to 72.9 percent from 72.5 percent in May. Furthermore, the male unemployment rate eased to 5.3 percent from 5.4 percent, indicating improving stability within the male workforce segment.Disclaimer: Due care and diligence have been taken in compiling and presenting news and market-related content.
