Landmark Corridor Approved: How Rs 14,447 Cr Ganga Elevated Bridge Will Transform Varanasi's Mobility
Cabinet Approves Mega Corridor for Varanasi Decongestion
The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs has approved a massive Link/Connector Corridor project connecting National Highway-19 (NH-19) and the Varanasi Ring Road in Uttar Pradesh. This 46.039 km undertaking is designed to drastically decongest the complex road network of Varanasi while providing seamless urban mobility. The project will be implemented under the Hybrid Annuity Model (HAM). The total capital cost for this transformative initiative stands at Rs.14,447.64 crore. This includes a civil construction cost of Rs.6,037.85 crore and land acquisition costs totaling Rs.541.11 crore under NH(O).
Engineering Marvels and Iconic Design Features
The corridor is set to be an iconic addition to the city's skyline. It features a six-lane elevated main carriageway complemented by loops, ramps, link roads, and service roads. A central feature of the project is the crossing over the River Ganga with an iconic 910 m cable-stayed bridge.Connectivity for pedestrians will be enhanced by a 1.32 km extradosed Foot Over Bridge-cum-Major Bridge, which includes travelators. This structure provides seamless pedestrian access directly to the Kashi Vishwanath Temple. The project also incorporates dedicated emergency parking bays and noise barriers inspired by Varanasi’s cultural heritage.
Massive Time Savings Projected by Elevated NH-19 Link
The elevated corridor is poised to deliver significant improvements in urban mobility and transport efficiency. It is projected to reduce the average travel time across its influence area from approximately 60 minutes down to just 20 minutes, representing a substantial reduction of nearly 67 per cent.Furthermore, the travel time between NH-19 and Kashi Railway Station will be cut in half. This journey, which currently takes about 50 minutes, is expected to take only around 25 minutes, translating to approximately a 50 per cent saving. By providing controlled-access movement, the project aims to reduce vehicle operating costs and emissions across the region.
Boosting Pilgrimage Tourism and Multimodal Connectivity
Aligned with the PM Gati Shakti National Master Plan, this corridor acts as a powerful economic stimulant for eastern Uttar Pradesh. It significantly improves access for the 15 crore tourists and pilgrims who visit Varanasi annually. Key religious, educational, and cultural landmarks like the Kashi Vishwanath Temple, Banaras Hindu University (BHU), Namo Ghat, and Ramnagar Fort will be directly benefited by this improved infrastructure. The corridor strengthens multimodal connectivity by linking several major economic and logistics nodes. These include Lal Bahadur Shastri Airport, various Railway Stations, Ramnagar IWAI Port, and the Chandauli SEZ Economic Node. By facilitating efficient movement of both passenger and freight traffic, the project aims to support sustainable regional growth.
