Cabinet Approves ₹24,815 Crore Railway Mega-Boost, Set to Revolutionize North and South India Connectivity
The Indian railway infrastructure is poised for a massive upgrade following the Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs (CCEA) approving two major multitracking railway projects. Chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the CCEA approved a total outlay of ₹24,815 crore for ambitious rail expansion across Uttar Pradesh and Andhra Pradesh. These crucial projects will increase the existing national railway network by approximately 601 kms, spanning 15 districts across the two states.Powering North India: The Ghaziabad–Sitapur Corridor
The first major initiative focuses on the Ghaziabad–Sitapur route, approved with a staggering outlay of ₹14,926 crore. This section is vital, forming a key segment of the Delhi-Guwahati High Density Network (HDN 4).The route is crucial for bolstering connectivity between the northern and eastern regions of the country. It passes through multiple major industrial hubs, including Ghaziabad (electronics and pharmaceuticals), Moradabad (brassware), Bareilly (textiles), and Shahjahanpur.
To ensure seamless transit, the project alignment smartly plans to bypass congested stations in areas like Hapur, Moradabad, and Rampur. Officials noted that this bypassing strategy, coupled with the proposal for six new stations, will optimize commodity movement.
Electrifying the East Coast: Andhra’s Mega Railway Expansion
The second critical project is the Rajahmundry (Nidadavolu)–Visakhapatnam (Duvvada) line, receiving an outlay of ₹9,889 crore. This segment plays a significant role in quadrupling the capacity of the Howrah–Chennai High Density Network (HDN).This 198 km stretch traverses East Godavari, Konaseema, Kakinada, Anakapalle, and Vishakapatnam districts of Andhra Pradesh. Running along the eastern coastline, the corridor is already one of the busiest, predominantly freight-oriented sections of the East Coast Rail Corridor.
The enhanced connectivity is expected to provide a substantial boost to the tourism sector. It will improve access to key spiritual and tourist destinations such as Annavaram, Antarvedi, and Draksharamam.
Transforming Logistics and Economy Across India
Collectively, these proposed railways are transformative arteries for India's economy. The enhanced capacity is essential for the seamless transportation of high-volume commodities. The projects will facilitate the movement of vital materials including coal, foodgrains, cement, POL, iron and steel, fertilizers, and sugar.
Beyond freight, the increased reliability and capacity of the network are set to stimulate local economies and boost tourism across the 15 covered districts. The comprehensive nature of this ₹24,815 crore outlay marks a major step in strengthening national logistical resilience.
