Varanasi Decongestion Plan Approved: Cabinet Greenlights Rs 10,998 Crore Elevated Corridor for Major Economic Boost in Uttar Pradesh
Massive Infrastructure Push Transforms Varanasi Connectivity
The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs has approved a pivotal infrastructure project aimed at significantly decongesting and modernizing the urban transport network of Varanasi. The approval concerns the development of a 43.218 km Link/Connector Corridor along the Varuna River for the residents and businesses of Uttar Pradesh. This strategic move, implemented by the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI), promises to reshape regional connectivity within Eastern Uttar Pradesh. The corridor project is designed as a predominantly elevated structure and comprises a 6/4-lane carriageway. It includes essential components such as flyovers, loops, ramps, service roads, and main carriageway infrastructure. The total capital cost allocated for this large-scale urban upgrade is Rs 10,998.32 crore.
Project Scope and Financial Breakdown
The corridor provides seamless connectivity between NH-31 and the Varanasi Ring Road. It is a core element of the broader Varanasi Decongestion Plan. Financially, the project structure incorporates civil construction costs totaling Rs 4,565.33 crore. An additional Rs 934.91 crore has been allocated specifically for land acquisition within the designated area. This sophisticated transportation link will substantially improve access to multiple critical points across the region. These include Kashi Railway Station, the Varanasi Airport, and both the Varanasi City and Kashi Railway Stations. The corridor also enhances accessibility to Deen Dayal Upadhyaya Junction and Ramnagar Port.
Economic Impact and Operational Efficiency Gains
The project is engineered to deliver dramatic improvements in travel efficiency and road safety across the region. Currently, the journey between NH-31 and Kashi Railway Station takes approximately 40 minutes. With the new corridor, this transit time is projected to be reduced to merely 20 minutes. This represents a reduction of nearly 50 per cent on crucial city routes.Operationally, the corridor is designed for an operating speed range of 80-100 km/h. Beyond reducing travel time and improving road safety, the infrastructure will significantly reduce vehicle operating costs for both freight and passenger traffic utilizing the area.
Strengthening Regional and Multimodal Integration
This elevated transport network transcends merely local decongestion; it acts as a catalyst for broader regional economic growth. The project is set to strengthen connections to one major Economic Node (Chandauli Social Economic Zone). It also enhances access to six crucial Logistics Nodes within the vicinity. In line with the PM Gati Shakti National Master Plan, the corridor facilitates vital multimodal integration. This will support the efficient movement of agricultural produce and industrial goods. Furthermore, it will ease the transport of construction materials and minerals, boosting logistics efficiency across eastern Uttar Pradesh.
Enhancing Quality of Life and Tourism
Overall, the initiative establishes a modern, access-controlled urban transport corridor. It is set to boost tourism by improving accessibility to the ghats of Varanasi. The project also extends benefits to adjoining areas such as the Chandauli region.By enhancing connectivity and promoting integrated multimodal transport, this investment aims not only to decongest the city but also to improve the overall quality of life for both residents and visitors in Varanasi.
