India EV Infrastructure Surges: Centre Reports Over 67,600 Chargers as Massive Schemes Accelerate Green Mobility Push​

The government's commitment to electric mobility is becoming tangibly apparent in the nation's growing charging infrastructure. The Ministry of Heavy Industries informed the Lok Sabha on August 11 that India currently possesses 67,657 electric vehicle (EV) chargers. This count includes 1,139 stations dedicated to battery-swapping technology.

The data release underscores the ongoing efforts by the government to promote domestic EV manufacturing and ensure robust charging support across the country. A total of 9,583 EV public charging stations have been installed thus far, according to the ministry's statement.

FAME India Phase II and Charging Network Status​

The successful rollout of electric vehicles is strongly linked to key national programs. Under the FAME India Phase-II scheme, which ran from April 2019 to March 2024, the government allocated budgetary support totaling Rs 11,500 crore.

This scheme has provided support to approximately 16.72 lakh electric vehicles. Furthermore, it facilitated the deployment of 5,299 electric buses as of July 31, 2026. The FAME program also designated an allocation of Rs 912.50 crore specifically for EV public charging stations.

Focus on PM E-DRIVE Scheme Implementation​

The momentum towards electrification continues with the specialized PM E-DRIVE scheme, which was notified in September 2024. This crucial initiative is backed by a comprehensive outlay of Rs 10,900 crore and aims to incentivize diverse segments of the EV market.

This includes two-wheelers, three-wheelers, trucks, buses, and ambulances. As of June 30, the scheme has supported or sold 26.59 lakh EVs nationwide. The government is also focused on public transport, allocating Rs 4,391 crore under PM E-DRIVE for the deployment of electric buses. Of this amount, 14,000 vehicles have been allocated so far.

Oversight Through Dedicated Transport Schemes​

Beyond these two major schemes, specialized support is provided through other dedicated programs. The PM e-Bus Sewa-Payment Security Mechanism scheme carries an outlay of Rs 3,435.33 crore. As of July 10, 2026, this specific mechanism covered a total of 27,555 e-buses.

These vehicles are sourced from various initiatives, comprising 10,000 buses under MoHUA’s PM-eBus Sewa and 14,000 under the PM E-DRIVE umbrella. The remaining portion of this coverage comes from state government and State Transport Undertaking initiatives (3,555 vehicles).

Government Incentives Drive EV Adoption​

To accelerate the transition to electric mobility, the Centre has introduced significant fiscal incentives for both consumers and infrastructure providers. GST applicable to EVs and their charging stations has been reduced to a favorable 5 percent.

Furthermore, battery-operated vehicles are being afforded green licence plates, which exempt them from certain permit requirements. The Road Transport and Highways Ministry has also advised all states to implement a waiver of road tax on electric vehicles to support market penetration.
