
Steel Cutting Ceremony Marks Start of Coastal Research Vessel Project
Garden Reach Shipbuilders and Engineers Ltd has commenced construction of two Coastal Research Vessels for the Geological Survey of India, marking a significant addition to India’s offshore research capabilities.The ceremonial steel cutting, which formally signals the start of shipbuilding, was held in the presence of GSI Director General Asit Saha along with senior officials from GRSE and representatives of the Indian Armed Forces.
Vessel Specifications and Research Capabilities
Each Coastal Research Vessel will measure 64 metres in length and 13 metres in width. The ships are designed to support a wide range of offshore scientific activities.The vessels will be equipped to carry out offshore geological mapping, mineral exploration including dredging, as well as ocean environment monitoring and research. They will feature modern, fully equipped scientific laboratories onboard for data processing and sample analysis.
The ships are expected to operate within India’s Exclusive Economic Zone, strengthening scientific exploration and marine resource assessment efforts.
GRSE’s Expanding Order Book in Research and Defence Segments
Beyond the two Coastal Research Vessels for GSI, GRSE is currently building an ocean research vessel for the National Centre for Polar and Ocean Research under the Ministry of Earth Sciences.The shipyard is also constructing an Acoustic Research Ship for the Naval Physical and Oceanographic Laboratory, an establishment under the Defence Research and Development Organisation.
In the defence segment, GRSE is presently building 12 warships of various classes for the Indian Navy.
International and State-Level Shipbuilding Projects
Alongside research and naval platforms, GRSE is executing multiple commercial and state-level projects. The shipyard is constructing eight advanced multi-purpose vessels for a German company and 13 hybrid ferries for the West Bengal government.With research platforms, defence warships, and commercial vessels under construction, GRSE continues to expand its role as a key Indian shipbuilder serving both domestic and international clients.
