He added that the status will further empower GRSE to enhance self-reliance in defense manufacturing and contribute meaningfully towards India's emergence as a leading maritime power by 2047.

A Legacy in Shipbuilding

Established in 1884, GRSE has a rich history dating back to its beginnings as a small workshop for the River Steam Navigation Company, which was taken over by the Government of India in 1960. The shipyard achieved several pioneering milestones: delivering the country's first indigenous warship, INS Ajay, in 1961, and building the first Indian Export Warship, CGS Barracuda for the Government of Mauritius.

GRSE holds a unique position as the only shipyard specializing in research ships. To date, the company has delivered over 800 marine platforms, with a total of 118 warships provided to the Navy, Coast Guard, and friendly foreign nations, setting the highest delivery figure among Indian shipyards.

Beyond core shipbuilding, GRSE is diversified into engineering projects. Its operational profile includes pre-fabricated steel bridges, marine diesel engine overhauling, and the manufacture of 30mm Naval Surface Guns. The shipyard boasts four distinct shipyards and has a proven capacity to undertake concurrent construction of 28 ships at one time.
