Bharat Forge Surges into Billion-Dollar Semiconductor Industry, Secures Massive Defense Orders

Bharat Forge is rapidly expanding its industrial footprint, announcing its entry into the highly lucrative billion-dollar semiconductor industry. Chairman Baba Kalyani confirmed that the company has secured significant orders and is currently collaborating with three of the world's top five chipmakers on a new project. This move positions Bharat Forge at the forefront of advanced material manufacturing required for critical global technology supply chains.

Semiconductor Collaboration Drives Technological Leap

The collaboration focuses on developing and manufacturing specialized parts intended for lithography machines, which are essential pieces of equipment in the sophisticated process of chipmaking. This development aligns with India's broader push toward building a domestic semiconductor ecosystem.

The government's India Semiconductor Mission (ISM) is actively attracting investments exceeding Rs 1.65 lakh crore across various approved fabrication and testing projects. The ISM program, which began with a Rs 76,000-crore outlay, is being expanded under ISM 2.0 to encompass indigenous intellectual property and essential equipment materials.

Defense Sector Sees Major Surge for Bharat Forge

In addition to the high-tech venture, Bharat Forge’s defense division is experiencing massive growth. The company recently secured its largest-ever order for army carbines, highlighting a strong demand runway from both domestic and international military markets.

Kalyani commented that the Indian defense sector has undergone its biggest reform. He noted that defense requirements have shifted fundamentally, moving "from component level" to being a complete platform opportunity for companies like Bharat Forge. This evolution is expected to drive a significant surge in the Indian defense sector over the next five years.

Global Opportunities and Industrial Necessity

Bharat Forge’s global reach is substantial, with exports constituting almost 40% of its total defense sales. Kalyani emphasized that there are major international shifts occurring in the defense industry, generating opportunities across India, the US, and Europe.

The company leadership underscored the critical need for enhanced international partnerships within Indian businesses. A focus on industrial self-reliance is paramount, as the organization stated it must transition from being a service nation to becoming a product nation. The current improvements in the ease of doing business environment were acknowledged, coupled with the need for continuous effort and development.
