The Union Cabinet, chaired by the Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi, has greenlit a significant expansion of urban infrastructure with the approval of Phase 2(A) of the Ahmedabad Metro Rail Project. Phase 2(A) entails the development of an advanced 6.032 km metro corridor, which will incorporate five key stations. These stations are situated at Ashram Road, Koteshwar Prachin Mandir, Sabarmati River, Sardar Nagar, and Airport.The project is crucial for seamlessly integrating residential and commercial hubs with the existing Ahmedabad-Gandhinagar Metro Rail Network. Upon the operationalization of Phase 2(A), the combined active metro rail network in the region will span 77.63 Km. The total completion cost approved for the project, including Interest during Construction (IDC), is Rs. 2,169.04 crore.

Approximately 2,000 individuals are expected to be employed during the peak construction activity period. Furthermore, 500 positions are anticipated to be available for Operation and Maintenance once the system is operationalized.
Moreover, beyond daily commutes, this phase ensures that key areas will be ready to host future large-scale events, including preparatory facilities for the World Police Games 2029 and Commonwealth Games 2030. The metro’s introduction is set to significantly reduce carbon emissions compared to traditional fossil fuel transport methods.
