Natarajan Chandrasekaran, Chairman of Tata Sons, has addressed the sexual harassment allegations stemming from the TCS Nashik office, terming the matter "gravely concerning and anguishing." He assured stakeholders that the group is handling the crisis with utmost seriousness and urgency. In a strongly worded statement, Chandrasekaran emphasized that the Tata Group maintains an unwavering zero-tolerance policy towards any form of misconduct or coercion by its employees. He confirmed that action had already been initiated against the accused individuals.
Corporate Commitment Amidst Internal Probe
A comprehensive internal investigation is currently underway, led by Aarthi Subramanian, Chief Operating Officer at TCS. Chandrasekaran reaffirmed the group’s commitment to upholding the highest standards of workplace safety and employee well-being.The Chairman stated that appropriate and stringent action will be taken against any employees found guilty. The investigation aims not only to establish the facts but also to identify all individuals responsible for the situation. Furthermore, the group has promised the prompt implementation of necessary process improvements and corrective measures.
Scope of the Controversy and Legal Intervention
The allegations were raised by eight female employees at the TCS Nashik facility, accusing certain senior colleagues of both sexual harassment and mental abuse. The case has rapidly sparked widespread concern across the IT sector, particularly after claims that the human resources department failed to adequately respond to previous complaints. The gravity of the situation prompted local authorities to intervene, constituting a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to probe the matter. As part of the ensuing investigation, police sources reported the arrest of seven individuals, including a female HR manager.
Industry Calls for Systemic POSH Reforms
Amid the escalating controversy, the Nascent Information Technology Employees Senate (NITES) has approached the Ministry of Labour and Employment for systemic reform. The employees' body formally requested a comprehensive audit of compliance with the Prevention of Sexual Harassment (POSH) Act within TCS.In a letter addressed to Labour Minister Mansukh Mandaviya, NITES called for an immediate and time-bound inspection of POSH compliance across all TCS establishments. The proposed audit must rigorously examine the constitution and functioning of internal complaints committees.
NITES further sought scrutiny of the role played by human resources personnel and senior management in handling complaints. The body also requested verification of whether employees faced any retaliation or discouragement while reporting incidents.
Beyond TCS, NITES urged authorities to conduct a wider state-level audit of POSH compliance. This oversight should cover all IT and IT-enabled services (ITES) companies operating in Maharashtra, including large multinational corporations. The organization stressed that such measures are crucial to ensuring all workers in the sector have a safe, respectful, and legally compliant workplace.
