The two leaders held a brief encounter at a G7 gathering, marking their first in-person interaction in 16 months. While details of this cordial exchange were undisclosed, it nonetheless sets the stage for a crucial summit meeting in Evian-les-Bains. This opportunity allows both sides to reassess and strengthen the partnership established previously during PM Modi's visit to Washington D.C.

Navigating Tensions and Rebuilding Bilateral Trust​

The relationship between India and the US has seen fluctuating dynamics recently. Earlier downturns included punitive tariffs imposed by Washington on India, alongside controversial statements made by President Trump regarding military clashes between India and Pakistan last May. New difficulties arose following a recent incident where three Indian sailors were killed in strikes carried out by US military against merchant vessels off the coast of Oman.

In response to this maritime tragedy, which occurred after the US Central Command stated it was targeting vessels—Marivex (June 8), Settebello (June 9), and MT Jalveer (June 11)—that were allegedly attempting to violate a US blockade of Iranian ports, New Delhi reacted strongly. The government summoned the US charge d'affaires, Jason Meeks, asserting that the American military’s “lethal and deadly” strikes on commercial vessels with Indian crew members were "unacceptable."
