S. Korean President Set to Boost Global Ties: Mega Summit Talks with Modi, Focus on Energy Security

Seoul, April 19. President Lee Jae Myung has departed for a significant two-nation trip spanning India and Vietnam. The high-level tour is intended to bolster strategic economic ties and address global supply chain uncertainties. The discussions are particularly focused on energy market stability linked to the Middle East situation.

Lee will arrive in New Delhi later today, culminating in summit talks with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday. This meeting marks the third in-person interaction between the two leaders, following earlier dialogues held at the G7 and G20 summits last year.

Deepening Economic and Security Cooperation with India

The India summit is slated to focus heavily on expanding economic cooperation. Key areas identified include the maritime industries, shipbuilding, artificial intelligence, and defense sectors.

National Security Adviser Wi Sung-lac noted that the talks will also coordinate responses to energy supply chain uncertainties stemming from the Middle East. Furthermore, Lee plans to attend a dedicated business forum. This platform aims to explore new opportunities and support the operations of Korean companies, utilizing India as a major consumer market for Korean electronics and automakers.

Strategic Outreach to Vietnam and Critical Resources

Following India, President Lee is scheduled for a state visit to Hanoi, Vietnam, on Tuesday. This diplomatic journey sets the stage for crucial talks on Wednesday.

The talks are expected to focus heavily on cooperation concerning energy supply chains and critical minerals. This visit is notable as it positions Lee as the first foreign leader to visit Vietnam since To Lam's election earlier this month. He will hold talks with To Lam, who simultaneously holds Vietnam's presidency and General Secretary position, consolidating his national authority.

Expanding Diplomatic Reach Across Southeast Asia

The engagement in Vietnam is scheduled to continue the following day. President Lee is set to meet with Vietnamese Prime Minister Le Minh Hung, identified as the No. 2 official. He will also meet with National Assembly Chairman Tran Thanh Man, the No. 3 official.

These meetings will conclude with participation in a business forum aimed at bolstering economic cooperation between the two nations. Overall, the tour seeks to strengthen strategic partnerships, allowing South Korea to broaden its diplomatic reach with fast-growing economies across the region.
