Samvardhana Motherson Surges Over 7% as Q1 Earnings Post Record Revenue and Massive Profit Jump

Shares of auto components powerhouse Samvardhana Motherson International soared over 7% on the BSE, hitting Rs 166. The significant rally follows the company's release of record-breaking Q1 FY27 earnings. Motherson reported a substantial 70% jump in profit after tax and achieved its highest quarterly revenue ever recorded.

Company Delivers Record Financial Results and Major Acquisitions

The regulatory filing confirmed that the company's revenue from operations rose 17% year-over-year (YoY) to Rs 35,244 crore. This growth was underpinned by strong performance across all of Motherson’s business units. Profit after tax witnessed an impressive surge of 70.1% YoY, reaching Rs 1,032 crore. Furthermore, EBITDA expanded by 26% YoY, totaling Rs 3,104 crore.

Motherson significantly expanded its global footprint during the quarter. The company announced the acquisition of Chinese tech firm Shenzhen Autocruis for $22.6 million through SMR Automotive (Langfang) Co. Additionally, Motherson completed two major acquisitions in July: the Wiring Harness business of Nexans Autoelectric and Yutaka Giken. Collectively, these recent acquisitions are projected to contribute nearly $2 Billion of annualized revenue.

Motilal Oswal Reiterates Buy Amid Premiumization Trend

Domestic brokerage firm Motilal Oswal reaffirmed a BUY rating on Samvardhana Motherson International stock. The brokerage set a revised target price of Rs 178, citing the company's ability to outperform global automobile sales cycles. Analysts highlighted the trend of rising premiumization and the EV transition as major tailwinds for Motherson’s growth story.

Motilal Oswal added that industry consolidation is likely given the adverse global macro environment. This shift positions Samvardhana Motherson International as a probable long-term beneficiary. The company's diverse business model, which mandates that no single country or client accounts for more than 10% of revenue, has been instrumental in ensuring stable growth regardless of end-market demand fluctuations.

Nomura Sets Target Price Citing Operational Leverage and Risks

Nomura maintained a BUY rating on Samvardhana Motherson International shares, establishing a target price of Rs 171, suggesting an upside potential exceeding 10%. The brokerage noted that the company’s FY27F/28F/29F revenue growth rates—projected at 11%, 12%, and 18% respectively—are above consensus estimates. This forecast is driven by greenfield plant ramp-ups and robust growth in non-auto segments, particularly consumer electronics.

The firm projects sustained margin improvement fueled by operating leverage, pointing to potential for acquisition-driven growth with free cash flow yields stabilizing at 6-7% in FY28F/29F. However, Nomura pointed out operational pressures due to rising input costs. Copper prices increased 4% QoQ and are up approximately 40% YoY, placing pressure on manufacturing margins.

Input Costs and Geopolitical Risks Remain Under Scrutiny

Management is actively working with customers to offset higher input costs while simultaneously driving cost optimization initiatives. Nomura noted that commodity pass-through mechanisms typically operate over a 3 to 6 month lag, presenting challenges in immediate margin protection. Freight costs remain elevated; the World Container Index was up 40% YoY and 83% QoQ, adding logistics expense for timely deliveries.

A key risk identified by Nomura involves potential material import taxes implemented in US geographies. Such tariffs could impact Motherson's major clients, such as Audi, potentially affecting the company's order book and jeopardizing the target price achievement.
