₹865 Crore in Seizures: EC Cracks Down on Campaign Illegalities in Bengal and Tamil Nadu
The Election Commission of India has reported a massive crackdown on illegal election financing in Tamil Nadu and West Bengal. Seizures across both states have cumulatively exceeded ₹865 crore, spanning pre-assembly elections and recent by-elections. This unprecedented financial scale highlights the Election Commission's vigilance in enforcing the Model Code of Conduct (MCC).Scale of Pre-Election Seizures
Authorities have recovered significant contraband and illegal funds over the past weeks. West Bengal alone recorded seizures worth ₹427 crore since the Election Seizure Management System was activated on February 26th. Similarly, Tamil Nadu reported seizures amounting to ₹438 crore under comparable categories. These high-value seizures include a mixture of cash, drugs, precious metals, liquor, and undeclared ‘freebies.’ The scale of the recoveries underscores the commitment to maintaining a level playing field in the political landscape.
Operational Deployment and Enforcement Measures
To manage this massive enforcement drive, the Commission has mobilized a formidable surveillance network. A total of over 5,000 Flying Squad Teams have been deployed across both states. Complementing this rapid response capability are more than 5,300 Static Surveillance Teams. The deployment strategy aims to ensure stringent enforcement of the MCC and facilitate surprise checks. These logistical measures are designed to curb any attempts to undermine the democratic process.
Ensuring Free and Fair Polls
Beyond the physical seizures, the Commission issued clear directives to district authorities. Officials have been instructed to ensure elections remain free, fair, and entirely inducement-free. Paramount emphasis has been placed on avoiding any inconvenience or disruption to the general public.Furthermore, the setup of District Grievance Committees provides a structured channel. These committees are responsible for addressing and resolving complaints related to the intense enforcement activities. The focus remains on creating an orderly, transparent electoral process for all stakeholders.
