Railway Network Surges! Cabinet Approves Dual Multitracking Projects in Odisha-Jharkhand to Boost Economic Mobility
The Indian Railways are set for a major capacity augmentation following the approval of two significant multi-tracking projects by the Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs. These projects, covering four districts across Odisha and Jharkhand, aim to drastically improve operational efficiency and streamline logistics across the regions. The proposed initiatives carry a total estimated cost of Rs 3,907 crore (approximately). The completion timeline for these vital upgrades has been set up until 2030-31.
Strategic Importance of Rail Capacity Expansion
The approval marks a critical step toward realizing the Prime Minister's vision of a "New India." These infrastructure enhancements are intended to make local communities "Atmanirbhar" (self-reliant) by fostering comprehensive regional development and expanding employment opportunities. The two approved projects include the Paradeep - Haridaspur Doubling project and the Rajkharsawan - Dangoaposi 4th Line extension. The multi-tracking proposals are designed to alleviate existing congestion and provide seamless connectivity for both goods and passengers.
Enhancing Connectivity Across Odisha and Jharkhand
These rail expansions will significantly increase the operational network of Indian Railways by approximately 145 Kms. This augmentation is not just an infrastructure upgrade; it is a social benefit, set to enhance connectivity to roughly 1,526 villages supporting a population of about 14 lakhs. The improved rail access will also bolster tourism in the region. Key destinations scheduled for enhanced connectivity include Lalitgiri Buddhist Complex, Shree Baladevjew Temple, and Meghahatuburu Hills.
Boost for Freight Traffic and Climate Goals
A major focus of these projects is bolstering the transportation capacity for essential commodities. The routes are vital arteries for carrying goods such as coal, iron ore, limestone, dolomite, and gypsum. The capacity augmentation works are projected to introduce an additional freight traffic volume amounting to 44 MTPA (Million Tonnes Per Annum). This substantial increase in cargo movement will support the industrial backbone of Eastern India.
Railways Drive Economic and Environmental Efficiency
Investing in railways aligns directly with national climate goals and logistics efficiency. As a highly energy-efficient mode of transport, these projects contribute positively to environmental sustainability.Furthermore, by enhancing rail capacity, the initiatives are expected to help reduce oil imports by 06 Crore Litres. This reduction is also calculated to lower CO2 emissions by 29 Crore Kg, which is equivalent to planting 1 Crore trees. The infrastructure upgrades promise substantial economic and ecological benefits.
