
Rail Network Set for Massive Leap: Cabinet Greenlights Multi-Tracking Projects in Odisha and Jharkhand Worth Rs 3,907 Crore
The Indian Railways is set to significantly upgrade its network infrastructure with the approval of two major multi-tracking projects. The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs has sanctioned these crucial developments, injecting substantial capital into the infrastructure of Odisha and Jharkhand states. These projects are designed to streamline operations and substantially alleviate existing railway congestion across the targeted regions.Key Approved Projects and Financial Scale
The total estimated cost allocated for the two pivotal projects stands at approximately Rs 3,907 crore. The approved schemes include critical lines such as Paradeep - Haridaspur Doubling and Rajkharsawan - Dangoaposi 4th Line. These projects are aligned with the PM-Gati Shakti National Master Plan, focusing on enhanced multimodal connectivity and superior logistic efficiency across the states.These multi-tracking initiatives are projected to increase the existing network of Indian Railways by approximately 145 Kms. The targeted development aims to provide seamless connectivity for the movement of people, goods, and essential services in the covered districts.
Boosting Connectivity and Community Impact
The infrastructure upgrade will directly benefit a large segment of the local population. These proposals are expected to enhance railway access to nearly 1,526 villages, which together house a community of about 14 lakhs residents.Beyond serving the immediate communities, the enhanced rail capacity will boost connectivity to various prominent tourist destinations across the country. This includes sites like the Lalitgiri Buddhist Complex and Shree Baladevjew Temple, Meghahatuburu Hills, among others.
Economic Boost and Freight Capacity Augmentation
These routes are vital arteries for the transportation of essential commodities. Key materials benefiting from these upgrades include coal, iron ore, dolomite, limestone, and gypsum.The capacity augmentation work is expected to result in a substantial increase in freight traffic, adding up to 44 MTPA (Million Tonnes Per Annum). This economic injection supports regional development goals as envisioned by Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi for an Atmanirbhar region.
Environmental and Operational Efficiencies Gained
The decision underscores the Railways' commitment as an environmentally friendly and energy-efficient mode of transportation. By optimizing logistics, these projects will help India achieve climate goals.Operationally, the enhanced efficiency is set to reduce oil imports by 06 Crore Litres. Furthermore, it is projected that this upgrade can lower CO2 emissions by 29 Crore Kg, an ecological impact equivalent to the plantation of 01 Crore trees.
