Massive Probe Launched: Allegations of Conversion Pressure and Sexual Misconduct Erupt at Major TCS Unit
A high-profile case of alleged misconduct at a Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) unit in Nashik has triggered a massive investigation, raising serious questions about corporate ethics and employee safety. Reports detail allegations of sexual harassment, pressure for religious conversion, and the concealment of personal details by one of the accused. The incident prompted Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis to hold a high-level meeting, directing a comprehensive probe into the matter. This development signals a significant governmental intervention into the workplace misconduct allegations.
Scope of Allegations and Victim's Complaint
The core allegations stem from a First Information Report (FIR) filed by a victim woman. She recounted meeting an accused individual approximately four years ago while attending the same college. He had promised to help her secure employment at TCS after her graduation. The complaint detailed a timeline of alleged misconduct. The victim stated that in July 2022, the accused attempted to force himself upon her and expressed a desire to marry her. She later joined the TCS Nashik unit, where the accused also worked.
By August 2024, the alleged harassment escalated when, at a resort, he reportedly established a physical relationship with her against her wishes. A major revelation came in February 2026, when the complainant discovered that the accused was, in fact, a married man with two children.
Allegations of Religious and Workplace Coercion
The victim stated that upon confronting him, the accused allegedly admitted he had no intention of marrying her. Furthermore, the complainant accused the individual and two other colleagues of frequently meeting her in the company canteen. These gatherings, according to the FIR, often included derogatory remarks about Hindu deities, including objectionable comments about worshipping 'Shivalinga' and insulting remarks about Draupadi from the Mahabharat. Most critically, the accused allegedly put immense pressure on her to convert to Islam, claiming the religion was superior.
Police have invoked several stringent sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita in relation to this complaint. These include section 68 (sexual intercourse achieved through deceitful means), 75 (sexual harassment), and 299 (hurting religious sentiments).
High-Level Investigation Underway
Following the filing of the initial complaint, a Special Investigation Team of Nashik police acted swiftly, registering nine FIRs and arresting eight individuals. The gravity of the situation prompted CM Fadnavis to convene a meeting of the home department to review key ongoing investigations. The Chief Minister stressed that "Incidents like religious conversion will not be tolerated," directing authorities to examine all possible patterns and angles thoroughly.
The police investigation has revealed further concerning evidence. The court noted that WhatsApp chats produced by the police showed the accused attempting to outrage the complainant's modesty by sending obscene messages.
Corporate Response and Internal Inquiry
In response to the mounting allegations, TCS issued a clarification on Friday regarding internal complaints. The company stated that a preliminary review indicated it had not received any complaints "of the nature that are being alleged on either our ethics or POSH (prevention of sexual harassment) channels."Despite this, the largest IT services company announced the formation of an oversight panel and the engagement of external entities to conduct its internal probe. TCS reaffirmed its zero-tolerance policy toward any form of misconduct or coercion.
TCS also clarified publicly that the woman accused, Nida Khan, was not an HR manager, contrary to media reports, and never held any leadership role within the organization.
Legal Proceedings and Police Action
In related legal developments, Nida Khan filed an anticipatory bail application before the Nashik sessions court. Her lawyer denied the charges, arguing that she could not be accused of outraging the modesty of another woman. The plea also cited her two-month-old pregnancy as grounds for bail.Meanwhile, a magistrate’s court extended the police remand of two co-accused, Raza Memon and Shafi Sheikh, until April 20. A Nashik Police Crime Branch team is actively stationed in Mumbra in Thane district to track down Nida Khan.
The investigation continues to proceed across multiple fronts, with eight other FIRs registered related to alleged sexual harassment and forcible religious conversion at the facility.
