Manipur: Civilians Ambushed on NH 202; Deadly Violence Reported in Ukhrul District

In a deadly ambush today, two civilians, including retired Indian Army personnel, were killed near National Highway 202 in Manipur's Ukhrul district. The attack occurred around 1:30 PM near TM Kasom village, striking vehicles traveling through the volatile region.

Police reports confirm that the incident involved an attack on over ten private vehicles, including passenger carriers, that were en route from Imphal to Ukhrul. Three passengers sustained serious bullet injuries and subsequently succumbed to their wounds at the site of the attack.

Details of the Deadly Ambush on NH 202

Additional security forces immediately rushed to the scene following the incident. They have commenced intensive operations to manage the volatile situation.

The attack took place when the convoy was ambushed from the adjoining hill range. The incident highlights the escalating danger along key transport corridors in the district.

Context of Civil Unrest and Highway Blockages

The ambush is set against a backdrop of escalating conflict in the area. Armed conflict has been ongoing for several days between Kuki and Tangkhul Naga groups. This instability particularly affects the Litan area of the Ukhrul district.

Consequently, National Highway 202 frequently faces blockages by armed miscreants. State police forces are currently tasked with providing security cover across the National Highway stretch between Litan and the Mahadev area. The fatal ambush, however, occurred at a location preceding the Litan reach from Ukhrul site.

Political Condemnation Following Attack

The violence has prompted strong condemnations from the highest level of state government. Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand issued a statement today. He condemned the cowardly ambush perpetrated against civilians in the Ukhrul district by armed militants.
