JSW Infrastructure Secures Kolkata Port Contract, Expanding Container Handling Capacity at Netaji Subhash Dock

JSW Infrastructure Limited has secured a significant contract for the integrated development of container terminals at the Kolkata Dock System. The company received a Letter of Award (LOA) from the Syama Prasad Mookerjee Port Authority (SMPA) for developing outer container terminals and taking over several existing berths at Netaji Subhash Dock (NSD).

The project involves the complete transformation of operations under a Design Build Finance Operate Transfer (DBFOT) model, structured through a Public-Private Partnership (PPP) framework. This award is set to bolster the region's maritime infrastructure by enhancing container handling capacity and operational efficiency at one of India's key eastern gateway ports.

The development project entails building two outer container handling berths and taking over five existing berths at NSD. The combined capacity, as per the current LOA, is capable of handling 0.93 million TEUs (equivalent to 13 million tonnes per annum) of containers and multipurpose cargo. The concession for this project will span a period of 30 years from the date of award.

The company received the notification of the LOA via email on June 8, 2026. The Concession Agreement is scheduled to be executed within 30 days of the LOA issuance or an agreed extension period.

Strategic Growth and Outlook

This new contract, along with previously secured projects at NSD involving the reconstruction of Berth 8 and mechanization of Berths 7 and 8 (which offer a capacity of 0.45 million TEUs), significantly expands JSW Infrastructure's operational footprint in the Kolkata Dock System. These investments are designed to address existing capacity constraints and improve berth productivity through mechanization, supporting trade volumes driven by the metropolitan region’s strong hinterland.

Strategically, the addition of this incremental container capacity is expected to raise the company’s combined container handling capacity at the Kolkata Dock System to approximately 1.4 million TEUs. If all identified projects are completed, JSW Infrastructure's overall container handling capacity is projected to increase further to around 1.8 million TEUs.

JSW Infrastructure Limited remains committed to scaling its cargo business and diversifying its portfolio. The company operates thirteen strategically located port concessions along India’s west and east coasts and maintains an international presence through a liquid tank storage terminal in UAE. Currently, the Company's total cargo handling capacity stands at 183 Million Tonnes Per Annum (MTPA), with plans to scale this capacity to 400 MTPA by 2030 or earlier.
