JSW Infrastructure Shares Surge as Company Secures Major Port Terminal Project at Kolkata Dock System

JSW Infrastructure witnessed a significant rally on Tuesday after securing a major infrastructure project from the Syama Prasad Mookerjee Port Authority (SMPA). The company's stock surged, trading at Rs 281 on the NSE, recording a gain of 4.67 percent. This lucrative contract provides JSW with a substantial role in enhancing the container handling capacity of Kolkata Dock System.

Securing the Outer Container Terminal Project

The successful bid by JSW Infrastructure was for the integrated development of the Outer Container Terminal at Netaji Subhas Dock (NSD). This project involves both two and five berths under the Kolkata Dock System. The company received a Letter of Award (LoA) from SMPA confirming this significant win.

This infrastructure development is based on the Design, Build, Finance, Operate and Transfer (DBFOT) model. It represents a vital public-private partnership (PPP). The project has been allocated a long concession period of 30 years.

Project Scope and Operational Impact

The Outer Container Terminal is expected to create approximately 0.93 million TEUs in two distinct phases. This award complements JSW Infrastructure's existing mandate at Netaji Subhas Dock. Previously, the company won another project involving the reconstruction of Berth 8 and mechanisation of Berths 7 and 8.

The prior project has a capacity of 0.45 million TEUs and is anticipated to begin interim operations shortly. With both contracts secured, JSW Infrastructure's combined container handling capacity at the Kolkata Dock System is expected to reach about 1.4 million TEUs.

Boosting Capacity in Eastern Port Ecosystem

Beyond the immediate additions, JSW Infrastructure’s overall container handling capacity is set for substantial expansion. Once all identified container expansion projects are complete, the company's capacity is projected to reach around 1.8 million TEUs.

The project development was supported by recognizing strong cargo demand within the Kolkata metropolitan region and a well-established hinterland. The initiative aims to address existing capacity constraints. It will also improve berth productivity through mechanisation and enhance vessel turnaround times at the port.

Strengthening Presence in Eastern Port Sector

This contract marks JSW Infrastructure's second project win from SMPA within one year. This milestone significantly strengthens the company's presence within the eastern port ecosystem. The successful acquisition further expands its footprint specifically into the container cargo segment of the industry.
