INS Taragiri Commissioned into Indian Navy, Strengthening Maritime Capabilities

Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Limited (MDL) announced the formal commissioning of INS Taragiri, an indigenously built stealth frigate, into the Indian Navy on Friday, April 3, 2026, at Visakhapatnam. The commissioning ceremony was presided over by Raksha Mantri Shri Rajnath Singh.

INS Taragiri represents a significant advancement in India’s indigenous warship design and construction, serving as the third ship in the Project 17A series. The basic design was developed by the Indian Navy's Warship Design Bureau, with detailed design and construction undertaken by MDL in Mumbai, overseen by the Warship Overseeing Team.

The frigate, measuring 149.02 meters in length and 17.8 meters in width, displaces 6,400 tons. It’s powered by a combination of Gas Turbines and Main Diesel Engines, enabling a speed of over 28 knots. INS Taragiri incorporates advanced stealth features, weapon systems, sensors, and automation for operational efficiency. Its inclusion in the fleet will significantly enhance India's maritime security across the Indian Ocean Region.

MDL achieved a 14% reduction in the build period compared to the first ship in the Project 17A series. Sea and Final Machinery Trials were completed in three months following Basin Trials, a notable accomplishment for this class of vessels. Prior to delivery, the SRGM, AK 630, Kavach, and IRL achieved operational readiness through collaborative efforts involving MDL, the Indian Navy, and original equipment manufacturers (OEMs). Notably, INS Taragiri also conducted and completed successful Test Firing of Brahmos prior to commissioning, a first for the P17A class.

The commissioning of INS Taragiri signifies MDL's contribution to India's defense manufacturing self-reliance, with 75% indigenous content. This aligns with the Aatmanirbhar Bharat vision and fosters collaboration with Indian industries, including a network of MSMEs, generating both direct and indirect employment opportunities.
