INS Mahendragiri Commissioned into Indian Navy, Highlighting MDL's Role in Indigenous Defence Manufacturing

In a significant advancement of India’s maritime security and indigenous defence capabilities, Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Limited (MDL) has successfully commissioned INS Mahendragiri into the Indian Navy. The commissioning ceremony took place in Visakhapatnam on Saturday, 11 July 2026. This event marks a milestone in the Government of India’s push toward Atmanirbharta in Defence.

INS Mahendragiri is an advanced stealth frigate and the fourth vessel of the Nilgiri class built by MDL. The ship was developed under Project 17A, with its basic design created by the Indian Navy's Warship Design Bureau (WDB), while the detailed construction and design were handled by MDL in Mumbai. A dedicated Warship Overseeing Team (Mumbai) supervised every stage of construction to ensure adherence to stringent naval quality benchmarks.

The induction of INS Mahendragiri is set to substantially bolster the Indian Navy's operational reach and surveillance capabilities, reinforcing India’s vision as a technologically advanced maritime nation across the Indian Ocean Region.

Combat Capabilities and Design Specifications

The frigate integrates state-of-the-art stealth technology, modern sensors, and highly automated systems, providing a decisive edge in combat effectiveness. The vessel is powered by a Combined Diesel or Gas (CODOG) propulsion system, comprising two Gas Turbines and two Main Diesel Engines.

Key specifications of the INS Mahendragiri are as follows:

SpecificationDetail
Length149 metres
Breadth17.8 metres
DisplacementApproximately 6,400 tonnes
Propulsion SystemCombined Diesel or Gas (CODOG)
Speed CapabilityExceeding 28 knots

A Benchmark in Shipbuilding Efficiency

The construction of INS Mahendragiri serves as proof of concept for the enhanced efficiency within the Project 17A shipbuilding programme at MDL. The ship achieved a remarkable 21% reduction in build period when compared to the First-of-Class vessel. Furthermore, through close collaboration between MDL, the Indian Navy Team, and the Warship Overseeing Team (Mumbai), the vessel successfully completed Sea Trials and Final Machinery Trials within two months of Basin Trials.

MDL has demonstrated formidable delivery capabilities by having delivered five warships and one submarine to the Indian Navy within a span of sixteen months. Key combat systems—including SRGM, AK-630, BrahMos, Kavach, and IRL—were achieved full operational readiness prior to delivery through coordinated efforts involving MDL, the Indian Navy, and Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs).

The commissioning underscores MDL’s commitment to Atmanirbhar Bharat Abhiyan and Make in India. With approximately 75% indigenous content, INS Mahendragiri stands as a testament to India's growing prowess in designing and building complex frontline warships domestically. The project also showcases the collective strength of Indian industries, including numerous MSMEs, thereby strengthening the domestic defence industrial ecosystem.

MAZDOCK Stock Price Movement

On Friday, Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Limited shares edged higher to close at ₹2420.10 after gaining ₹44.20 (1.86%). The stock saw substantial volume during the session, with 995,945 shares traded.
