
HAL and Safran Helicopter Engines Ink Contract for Aravalli Engine Development
Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) and Safran Helicopter Engines have finalized a contract with SAHAL Helicopter Engines Pvt. Ltd. (SAFHAL) to commence the design, development, manufacture, supply, and lifecycle support of the "Aravalli" engine. This new-generation high-power helicopter engine, designated for the 3,500 to 4,000 shp power class, is slated to power HAL's upcoming 13-ton Indian Multi-Role Helicopter (IMRH) and its naval variant, the Deck-Based Multi-Role Helicopter (DBMRH).The partnership, which was formally announced, underscores a significant advancement in India's aerospace and defence ecosystem, symbolizing the nation's ambition for greater self-reliance in critical aerospace propulsion technologies. The contract involves the joint effort of HAL and Safran Helicopter Engines, working through SAFHAL.
Mr. Ravi K, Chairman and Managing Director of HAL, stated that the signing marks a vital step toward self-reliance in aero-engine technologies. He noted that the collaboration with SAFHAL and Safran Helicopter Engines will establish a strong foundation for powering next-generation Indian helicopter platforms, supporting the operational requirements of both the IMRH and DBMRH, and contributing to a robust domestic aerospace industrial ecosystem.
Mr. Cédric Goubet, Chief Executive Officer of Safran Helicopter Engines, added that the landmark programme deepens the partnership between the two entities. He highlighted that this initiative reflects a shared commitment to innovation and industrial excellence, representing a new chapter in the strategic relationship between France and India. He also noted that this is the first time Safran HE is undertaking a co-development role for an engine of this class.
SAFHAL, a joint venture established between Hindustan Aeronautics Limited and Safran Helicopter Engines SAS, will utilize the complementary expertise of its parent companies. The comprehensive collaboration will cover advanced design methodologies, state-of-the-art manufacturing processes, thorough testing, and robust product support, adhering to the highest international aerospace standards.
The Aravalli engine program is anticipated to yield benefits beyond military applications. It also holds substantial potential for the future civil market, including use in offshore transportation, VIP transport, and utility missions. Furthermore, the programme is expected to significantly accelerate the development of indigenous Maintenance, Repair and Overhaul (MRO) capabilities within India.
Safran Helicopter Engines has a long-standing partnership with HAL, having previously supplied Artouste engines for Cheetah and Chetak helicopters. The relationship also included the Shakti engine family, which powers the Advanced Light Helicopter (ALH), Light Combat Helicopter (LCH), and Light Utility Helicopter (LUH). The Aravalli engine programme further elevates this enduring collaboration through the joint design and development of this specialized turboshaft engine.
