IndiGo Places Record Order for 1,000+ LEAP Engines in Historic MoU with CFM International
Shares of InterGlobe Aviation, parent company of IndiGo, are anticipated to be under significant focus following the signing of a major Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with CFM International. The agreement secures an order for more than 1,000 LEAP-1A engines, set to power 510 Airbus A320neo Family aircraft.This MoU represents the largest single order ever placed for LEAP engines and is also noted as a record milestone for CFM International. Beyond just engine supply, the partnership commitment extends deeply into operational support. The deal includes assistance from CFM International in establishing IndiGo's planned engine maintenance, repair and overhaul (MRO) facility.
Scope of the Strategic Partnership and MRO Commitment
The MoU goes significantly beyond the sale of engines. It establishes a long-term material services agreement designed to bolster the airline’s expanding fleet. This service commitment includes supplying necessary spare parts, ensuring improved reliability and predictable maintenance costs for IndiGo operations.IndiGo CEO Designate Willie Walsh emphasized that this partnership solidifies the company's transition toward becoming a global airline. He noted that CFM International has supported IndiGo since 2016, powering over 375 Airbus A320/321 Family aircraft currently in operation.
Industry Significance and Commitment to Growth
The renewed agreement underscores the strong relationship shared by both companies and reflects India's critical role in global aviation. GE Aerospace Chairman and CEO H. Lawrence Culp Jr. stated that this renewal highlights their continued commitment to IndiGo’s expansion. This support is provided through manufacturing facilities in Pune and engineering operations based in Bengaluru.Safran CEO Olivier Andriès described the agreement as a major milestone for the long-standing partnership. He stressed that India remains a strategically important market for Safran, noting that ongoing investments in LEAP engine production and MRO capabilities reflect a deep commitment to supporting IndiGo's growth and advancing India’s aerospace sector.
Operational Milestones and Global Engine Delivery
CFM International has made historic strides in this program. The company reported delivering over 10,000 LEAP engines so far, achieving the status of the fastest commercial aviation engine programme to reach that milestone.To ensure longevity and minimized maintenance, CFM is rolling out various upgrades. These include a high-pressure turbine durability kit designed to extend engine life. Furthermore, a reverse bleed system is being introduced to reduce overall maintenance requirements through its global MRO network.
India holds particular importance for the technology transfer and manufacturing aspect of this deal. India currently serves as CFM International’s third-largest market. Five Indian airlines operate over 400 LEAP-powered aircraft in India, with approximately 2,000 engines currently on order domestically.
