IndiGo Signs Record MoU with CFM for 1,000+ LEAP Engines and Fleet Support
IndiGo, one of India's largest airlines and a fast-growing carrier globally, announced it has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with CFM International. The deal commits the airline to an order for over 1,000 LEAP-1A engines, which will power 510 Airbus A320neo Family aircraft. This commitment marks the largest single order ever placed for LEAP engines and is noted as a record for CFM International. The MoU extends beyond engine supply, encompassing comprehensive support from CFM. The agreement includes assistance in establishing IndiGo's future engine MRO (maintenance, repair and overhaul) facility. Furthermore, the partnership involves a long-term material services agreement designed to support IndiGo's expanding fleet, ensuring predictable costs, high dispatch reliability, and world class service as the airline continues its operational growth.
Willie Walsh, Chief Executive Officer Designate at IndiGo, stated that the partnership reinforces their commitment to providing safe and efficient travel across their growing network. He noted that CFM has been a trusted partner since 2016, supporting a fleet that now exceeds 375 A320/321 Family aircraft. "The LEAP engine's industry leading proven reliability makes it the ideal choice to support our scale, operational resilience and sustainability ambitions," he said.
IndiGo has maintained a decade long relationship with CFM. The airline initially operated subfleet of Airbus A320ceo Family aircraft powered by CFM56-5B engines in 2016. This deepened in 2019 when IndiGo placed an order for LEAP-1A engines for its newest fleet of Airbus A320/321neo family aircraft.
H. Lawrence Culp, Jr., Chairman and Chief Executive Officer at GE Aerospace, commented on the renewal of trust. "IndiGo has trusted CFM to support its performance for a decade now, and we're honored to renew that trust with today's agreement," he said. He added that GE Aerospace is proud to build on more than 40 years of support for India's aviation sector, citing manufacturing in Pune and advanced engineering in Bengaluru.
CFM has significant presence in the Indian market, which stands as CFM's third largest market. Five Indian carriers currently operate over 400 LEAP powered aircraft with 2,000 engines on order globally. Olivier Andriès, Chief Executive Officer of Safran, noted that this milestone reflects the deep partnership between IndiGo and CFM, underscoring India's strategic importance to Safran through continued investments in LEAP engine production and MRO capabilities.
In related operational updates, Safran recently inaugurated its largest MRO center for the LEAP engine. This 45,000 square meter facility is designed to handle a capacity of up to 300 LEAP shop visits per year and features a next generation test bench. With over 10,000 engines delivered to date, CFM LEAP engines have achieved the fastest ramp in commercial aviation history.
