Hindustan Copper Limited Focuses on Expansion with Goals set for Increased Mining Capacity

Hindustan Copper Limited (HCL), a government entity and the only vertically integrated copper miner in India, is planning significant expansion across its operations while focusing on securing India’s mineral resources. Established as a 'Miniratna' Category-1 Central Public Sector Enterprise (CPSE) since 1967, HCL possesses access to approximately 45% of India's copper ore reserves and resources.

The company holds total Reserves & Resources amounting to 767.37 million tonnes as on April 1, 2025, with an average grade of 0.94%. HCL has 156.97 million tonnes of Copper Ore Reserves with an average grade of 1.31%. The company is currently working to increase its mining capacity from around 4 Million Tonnes Per Annum (MTPA) to 12.20 MTPA, which is currently under implementation.

Market Position and Industry Landscape

HCL serves as a key domestic supplier, with its copper concentrate being majorly consumed by primary copper producers within India. The market capitalization of the company stood at Rs. 51619 Crore as of August 5, 2026. HCL's operations include mining in the Indian Copper Complex (ICC) and the Khetri Copper Complex (KCC).

Globally, the world copper reserves stand at 5,600 million tonnes. India’s production in the fiscal year FY 24-25 was reported at 27.42 Kilotonnes (Kt), representing approximately 0.12% of the world's production. In contrast to this scale, the copper industry faces "The Copper Paradox," with available ore grades being significantly lower than those of previous decades.

These companies are strategically located near ports to manage logistics for both raw material import and finished product export. Future expansion plans include JSW announcing a smelter refinery capacity of 5 lakh tpa in Odisha, and Hindalco expanding its capabilities at Dahej.
