Sensex Slips as Profit Booking and Iran Sanctions Fears Weigh on Markets; Nifty Struggles Below 24,300

Equity markets saw a subdued trading session on August 24, with major benchmarks erasing their gains and trading in the red. The downturn was attributed to profit booking amidst consecutive rising trends, alongside mounting concerns over geopolitical tensions involving Iran.

At midday, the Sensex traded at 77,455.83, down 85 points or 0.11%. Similarly, the Nifty stood at 24,221.05, registering a decrease of 30.95 points or 0.13%. The market saw 2,163 shares advancing, while 1,587 declined, and 200 remained unchanged.

Profit Booking Erode Gains After Three Straight Days of Rallying

A primary factor contributing to the decline was profit booking. The benchmarks had experienced three consecutive days of rising performance prior to today's sell-off. This natural correction emerged as investors took profits after sustained upward momentum.

Geopolitical Tensions and Iran Sanctions Spark Market Concerns

Concerns surrounding international relations added a layer of volatility to the market sentiment. US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent is scheduled to hold a press conference at 1800 GMT on Monday, following threats to impose "the toughest sanctions in history" on Iran.

Iran, meanwhile, has vowed to halt all oil exports from the Gulf region if the ongoing economic war persists. This nearly six-month conflict between the US and Iran has significantly fueled global energy price increases, escalating fears of inflation across markets. Brent crude futures are noted to be hovering around $93 per barrel.

Technical View: Nifty Needs 24,300 for a Sustained Rally

Analysts provided technical insights into the short-term trajectory of the indices. V.K. Vijayakumar, chief investment strategist at Geojit Investments, stated that the Nifty needs to decisively cross the 24,300 mark for any further significant upmove to be established in the markets.

The near-term outlook suggests the Nifty is likely to operate within a range of 24,200 to 24,600 points. A breakout above 24,600 remains unlikely as long as there are prevailing headwinds such as elevated crude oil prices and intensifying geopolitical tensions.
