Farmers Get Major Relief: Centre Approves Key Procurement Boost for Potato, Chana, and Tur

In a significant move aimed at stabilizing agricultural markets, the Government of India has approved crucial procurement measures. These decisions provide substantial relief, ensuring remunerative prices and protecting producers from distress sales across various states.

The Centre has announced key procurements for potato in Uttar Pradesh, chana in Andhra Pradesh, and an extension for tur (pigeon pea) procurement in Karnataka. These steps reflect a coordinated focus on strengthening rural incomes and improving price assurance for farmers.

Boosting Potato Procurement in Uttar Pradesh

The Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare approved a major proposal regarding potato procurement in Uttar Pradesh. The state can now procure 20 lakh metric tonnes (LMT) of potatoes under the Market Intervention Scheme (MIS).

This procurement approval is designated for the 2025–26 agricultural year. The Centre established a fixed Market Intervention Price of ₹6,500.9 per metric tonne for the transaction. Financially, the government's contribution for this procurement is estimated at ₹203.15 crore.

Increased Procurement Ceiling for Chana in Andhra Pradesh

Addressing the needs of the state, the Centre has also approved chana (Bengal gram) procurement in Andhra Pradesh. Under the Price Support Scheme (PSS), the initial procurement ceiling was reviewed and significantly enhanced.

The limit for the Rabi Marketing Season 2025–26 has been increased to 1,13,250 metric tonnes. This ceiling adjustment follows a specific request made by the Andhra Pradesh state government.

Extending Tur Procurement Window in Karnataka

Farmers in Karnataka will receive extended support for their crops. The Union Agriculture Minister approved a 30-day extension for the procurement of tur (arhar/pigeon pea) under MSP.

This extension covers the Kharif 2025–26 season through the PSS. The procurement window will now remain open until May 15, 2026. This revised timeline allows a wider range of farmers ample opportunity to sell at assured MSP rates.

Government Reiterates Commitment to Market Stability

The Agriculture Minister emphasized the Centre's unwavering commitment to farmers. He stated that the government will not allow farmers to be forced into distress sales and will ensure they receive fair and remunerative prices.

These decisive measures were finalized following a virtual meeting involving concerned state agriculture ministers and relevant officials. The government highlighted that these interventions are designed to stabilize agricultural markets and strengthen rural economies.
