El Niño Threat Averted? Govt Outlines Massive Preparedness Plan to Safeguard Indian Farms and Economy
New Delhi: The Indian government has reaffirmed its robust readiness to mitigate potential agricultural damage stemming from a predicted El Niño impact. Agriculture Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan chaired a high-level meeting on Saturday, directing senior officials to implement comprehensive measures prioritizing farmers' welfare. The extensive review covered weather forecasts, water availability, and critical arrangements for seeds and agricultural inputs.Central Government Vows Full Preparedness Against Adverse Weather
During the meeting, the Minister stressed that farmer welfare remains the foremost priority for the government. Chouhan assured stakeholders that the central and state governments are fully prepared to counter potential climatic challenges. He clarified that taking all weather-related forecasts seriously, comprehensive action plans are already in motion, alleviating farmer concerns.Addressing potential future issues, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has indicated a likelihood of below-normal Southwest Monsoon in 2026. Seasonal rainfall is estimated at approximately 92 per cent of the long period average (LPA). Furthermore, the department noted that El Niño conditions may develop during the monsoon season, though the final assessment is expected in the last week of May 2026.
Current Water Storage Levels Signal Resilience and Stability
A key focus of the review was assessing existing resources and infrastructure. Officials reported that the water levels in the country's reservoirs are currently in a satisfactory position. Overall storage is noted to be better than normal.Crucially, reservoir storage is estimated at 127.01 per cent of the normal level for this period. This high storage figure is expected to provide essential assistance in meeting irrigation needs throughout the Kharif season. This buffer substantially reduces the immediate risk of moisture deficiency for agricultural activities.
Technological Adaptability Limits El Niño's Economic Shock
Despite the potential for climate fluctuations, the government assessment suggests the effect of El Niño on the agriculture sector is likely to remain relatively limited compared to historical precedents. This improved resilience is attributed to several key initiatives. The Minister emphasized that farming methods have become significantly more efficient and adaptable. These enhancements include improved water availability, the widespread adoption of micro-irrigation techniques, advanced scientific advisories, and systematic crop diversification.
Chouhan stated that through coordinated efforts, the government plans to implement better water management and expand irrigation facilities. These climate-resilient agricultural measures are designed to significantly control the impact of potential environmental challenges, bolstering the sector's economic stability.
