Willie Walsh Assumes Charge as Chief Executive Officer of IndiGo

IndiGo, recognized as one of the world's fastest-growing carriers in India, has announced that Willie Walsh has assumed the role of Chief Executive Officer (CEO). The appointment is set to lead the airline into a new era defined by accelerated growth and global ambition.

Walsh, who was first announced as CEO in March 2026, brings over four decades of experience in global aviation leadership. He will work alongside the Board and management team to build upon IndiGo's strong operational foundation while pursuing strategic ambitions, aiming to create long-term value for customers, shareholders, and all stakeholders.

Rahul Bhatia, Managing Director of IndiGo, welcomed Walsh to the organization. "As IndiGo enters its third decade and stands poised for the next phase of its growth, I am delighted to officially welcome Willie as the airline's Chief Executive Officer," stated Mr. Bhatia. He added confidence that under Walsh’s leadership, IndiGo would enhance its global aviation standing and increasingly contribute to the development of the Indian aviation sector, leveraging his extensive international experience in the industry.

Commenting on taking up the mantle, CEO Willie Walsh remarked that he looks forward to working with the entire IndiGo team to take the airline "to greater heights globally." He noted that IndiGo has built a significant legacy over two decades, establishing itself among the world's largest airlines rapidly. He described the current moment as "exciting and opportune" given India’s rise as one of the world's fastest-growing aviation markets.

Walsh is known for his pragmatic and decisive management style and has successfully guided major airlines through complex operating environments and periods of transformation. His distinguished career includes serving as a pilot at Aer Lingus, culminating in him becoming the CEO of that airline in 2001. Prior to joining IndiGo, he held leadership roles including CEO of British Airways (2005–2011) and CEO of International Airlines Group (2011–2020), most recently serving as Director General of the International Air Transport Association (IATA).

As CEO, Walsh will oversee IndiGo's overall management and strategic direction. His focus will be on accelerating global growth trajectory, driving operational excellence, strengthening commercial and network strategy, and improving the customer experience, working in close collaboration with the Board and leadership team to guide the company through its next phase of expansion.
