WABAG Secures 'Mega' Desalination Contract in Kuwait, Marking First Project in GCC

VA Tech Wabag Limited (WABAG), a multinational water technology group, has signed a significant contract for the Doha SWRO Desalination Plant with Recarbonation System - Stage II in Kuwait. This contract marks WABAG's debut project in Kuwait and substantially enhances the company's footprint across the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) region.

The project was awarded in June 2026 by the Ministry of Electricity, Water & Renewable Energy in Kuwait.

The Mega Project will be executed on a Design, Build, Operate basis. WABAG will undertake the work through an unincorporated joint venture with Heavy Engineering Industries & Shipbuilding Company K.S.C. (HEISCO).

The facility is slated to be a 60 MIGD (approximately 272 MLD) plant. The scope encompasses the integration of Sea Water Reverse Osmosis (SWRO) technology with a Recarbonation System.

The project timeline specifies construction over 36 months, followed by a five-year Operation & Maintenance period.

A key aspect of the project involves sustainability, with on-site Solar Photovoltaic (PV) systems being implemented to meet a portion of the plant's energy requirements. This move supports Kuwait’s clean-energy objectives while reducing the facility's carbon footprint.

Mr. Rohan Mittal, Head - Strategy and Business Growth - GCC at WABAG, commented on the agreement. He stated that the contract signing is an "important step towards commencement of our first project in Kuwait," highlighting the market's strategic importance. He added that the project contributes to "strengthening Kuwait's long-term water security" and reflects the company’s commitment to delivering advanced and sustainable desalination solutions.
