VA Tech Wabag Secures 'Mega' SWRO Project in Kuwait, Marking Maiden Entry into GCC Market

Chennai: VA Tech Wabag Limited (WABAG), a leading multinational water technology group, has secured the Design, Build, Operate (DBO) contract for the Doha SWRO Desalination Plant with Recarbonation System - Stage II in Kuwait. This significant order marks WABAG's first entry into the Kuwaiti market and further strengthens its presence across the GCC region.

The project is being undertaken on behalf of the Ministry of Electricity, Water & Renewable Energy (MEWRE) in Kuwait. WABAG will execute this landmark venture through an unincorporated Joint Venture (JV), alongside Heavy Engineering Industries & Shipbuilding Company K.S.C. (HEISCO), serving as the JV partner.

The contract encompasses the complete design, engineering, procurement, construction, and commissioning of a 60 MIGD (approximately 272 MLD) Seawater Reverse Osmosis (SWRO) Desalination Plant. The facility will incorporate a state-of-the-art Recarbonation System.

The project timeline includes an initial period for the EPC phase, which is scheduled to be completed within 36 months. This will be followed by a five-year Operation & Maintenance period, ensuring long-term operational reliability and excellence.

Addressing Kuwait's growing water demand, the facility will employ advanced desalination technologies to produce high-quality potable water. Furthermore, reflecting its commitment to sustainability, the project incorporates Solar Photovoltaic (PV) systems to partially meet the plant’s energy requirements, aiding in Kuwait’s renewable energy goals and contributing to a lower carbon footprint.

This order underscores WABAG's capabilities in delivering large-scale, technologically advanced desalination solutions that support sustainable water management and enhance regional water security.

Commenting on the achievement, Mr. Rohan Mittal, Head - Strategy and Business Growth - GCC at WABAG, stated that the Doha SWRO II Project represents a major milestone in the company’s growth within the GCC region and its entry into Kuwait. He added that the win reinforces WABAG's leadership in the Middle East desalination market, supporting a more water-secure and sustainable future through advanced and energy-efficient solutions.
