US Stocks Tumble as Long-Term Bond Yields Surge, Oil Prices Climb Amid Geopolitical Uncertainty

US stock markets concluded lower on Thursday amid renewed volatility in the bond market. A rise in long-term Treasury yields weighed heavily on investor sentiment. Simultaneously, oil prices rose by over 2% due to persistent uncertainty surrounding the conflict involving Iran and the Strait of Hormuz.

US Equity Markets See Decline as Bond Yields Rebound

Major indices retreated across the board on Thursday. The S&P 500 fell 0.7%, closing at 7,654.90. The Dow Jones Industrial Average dropped 1.2% to 52,822.72, while the Nasdaq Composite declined 1% to 26,080.07.

The retreat followed a day when US Treasury announced intentions to at least double its purchases of outstanding government bonds. This action was intended to ease pressure in the long-dated debt market. Initially, this announcement had pushed yields lower, but that trend reversed dramatically on Thursday.

Treasury Yields Climb as Intervention Fails to Convince Investors

The yield on the benchmark 30-year Treasury rose to 5.24%. This was an increase from 5.19% recorded a day earlier, though it remained below Tuesday's high of 5.33%. The rebound suggests that investors remain unconvinced that government purchases alone can counteract the forces driving the recent sell-off in longer-dated debt.

Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent addressed market concerns, stating that the department had a "big toolkit" available should yields continue rising. He noted that he believes this is a thinly traded area of the market and suggested corporate issuance was having an influence on pricing.

Global Oil Prices Surge Amid Middle East Tensions

Oil provided another significant pressure point for global markets. Brent crude surged 2.4% to $93.78 a barrel, while US West Texas Intermediate gained 2.4% reaching $87.83. This climb is attributed to the lack of easing in the standoff over shipping through the Strait of Hormuz.

Analysts point to broader economic pressures contributing to the rise in yields and commodity prices. These include heavy US government borrowing, large investments in artificial intelligence, and general uncertainty regarding the geopolitical situation.

Analyst Perspective on Market Signals and Risk

Arun Sundaram, senior vice president at CFRA Research, noted that the latest rise in yields indicated markets view the Treasury’s intervention as addressing symptoms rather than the underlying problems. He also cited instability surrounding the incoming Federal Reserve Chair Kevin Warsh, whose communication style regarding future monetary policy adds a layer of uncertainty for investors.

Fawad Razaqzada, market analyst at FOREX.com, noted that the Treasury's unexpected bond-buying announcement reflected concern over the sharp sell-off in longer-term US debt. However, he argued that lasting improvement in the bond market requires a more fundamental response, particularly measures aimed at improving the US fiscal position.

International Markets React as Tech Stocks Lead Asia’s Rally

European markets mostly ended lower. France's CAC 40 declined 0.6%, and Germany's DAX dropped 0.4%. The FTSE 100 in London remained largely unchanged.

Asian markets, however, moved positively, buoyed by strong performances in major technology stocks. Seoul’s Kospi surged nearly 6%, with SK Hynix jumping 12.7% after announcing a $29 billion share buyback. Samsung Electronics gained over 9%. Tokyo's Nikkei 225 rose 1.4%, while Hong Kong's Hang Seng climbed 0.8% and Shanghai's Composite index added 0.2%.

Outlook Focus Shifts to Jackson Hole Symposium

Attention is now focused on the annual Jackson Hole economic symposium next week. This event will offer investors a critical chance to search for signals concerning the future direction of US monetary policy and the incoming leadership at the Federal Reserve.
