Mumbai: Unihealth Hospitals Limited has highlighted its advanced surgical capabilities in Navi Mumbai after successfully treating a severe case of walled-off pancreatic necrosis. A 33-year-old man from Turbhe received treatment at UMC Hospitals, Nerul, following a complication arising from acute pancreatitis.

The patient initially presented with symptoms including upper abdominal pain, vomiting, and fever, leading to a diagnosis of pancreatitis. He also manages Type 1 diabetes and high cholesterol. Despite stabilizing after the initial illness required two weeks of hospitalisation elsewhere, his condition persisted for nearly 12 weeks, characterized by early satiety. A CT scan subsequently identified a large walled-off pancreatic necrosis around damaged tissue.

A minimally invasive approach was utilized during the procedure led by Dr. Harsh Sheth, Consultant -Bariatric & GI Laparoscopic Surgeon at UMC Hospitals. Instead of a conventional large open operation, the surgical team performed the controlled internal drainage via laparoscopy. This method involved creating a passage between the stomach and the pancreatic collection wall, allowing contents to drain into the stomach and providing internal drainage without requiring major open surgery. The procedure took approximately two hours, and the patient is recovering satisfactorily at his two-week follow up.

Dr. Harsh Sheth commented that walled-off pancreatic necrosis remains a challenging complication of severe pancreatitis. He noted that in carefully selected patients, minimally invasive internal drainage offers an effective treatment option while significantly reducing the surgical trauma associated with conventional open surgery.

This achievement underscores UMC Hospitals’ expanding range of advanced clinical interventions and specialized Gastrointestinal, Laparoscopic and Pancreatic Surgery capabilities. The hospital has recently expanded its footprint by offering groundbreaking procedures, including Navi Mumbai's first bilateral robotic Direct Anterior Approach total hip replacement, its first IVUS-guided coronary intervention, and the first robotic knee replacement.

Dr. Akshay Parmar, Founder & Managing Director of Unihealth Hospitals Limited, stated that every clinical milestone at UMC Hospitals is centered on the patient’s ability to return to a normal life. He emphasized the company's commitment to progressively building the necessary clinical depth, technology, and multidisciplinary expertise within Navi Mumbai.
