Tata Motors and Castrol India Partner to Advance Used Oil Circularity in Lubricant Value Chain

Mumbai/Pune, June 29, 2026: Tata Motors and Castrol India Limited have signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to jointly launch a pilot programme focused on establishing a used oil circularity ecosystem. This collaboration brings together the commercial vehicle manufacturer with Castrol India, a market leader in advanced automotive and industrial lubricant technology, to address the responsible management of used engine oil.

The pilot initiative aims to build a traceable system for collecting, storing, and channelizing used engine oil originating from Tata Motors' authorized service network located in Karnataka. The project targets the long-standing gap in the safe handling of used oil, which is classified as hazardous waste.

For the programme execution, Tata Motors’ authorized sales and service touchpoints within Karnataka will function as structured collection points for used engine oil. Castrol India will anchor the channelization process, directing collected oil to registered recyclers. This ensures quality and traceability through the recycling phase, leveraging Castrol's lubricant expertise and insights gained from previous pilot learnings.

Focus on Sustainable Mobility

Both companies highlighted the significant environmental importance of their collaboration. Mr. Vikram Agrawal, Head -Spares and Non-Vehicle Business at Tata Motors Commercial Vehicles, stated that responsible used-oil management is essential for building a truly circular automotive ecosystem in India. He added that by partnering with Castrol India, they are developing a credible, scalable model that connects responsible collection at service touchpoints to high-quality re-refined output, representing a meaningful step in Tata Motors' sustainability journey.

Mr. Anoop Jindal, Vice President -B2B (OEM) Sales at Castrol India Limited, emphasized the necessity of collaboration across the entire lubricant value chain for creating a circular economy. He noted that this association marks their first OEM focused on building a structured ecosystem for responsible used-oil management in India. Insights from used-oil collection pilots in southern India have informed the initiative, allowing them to create a more organized and traceable model for used-oil circularity alongside Tata Motors’ extensive service network.

This strategic move complements both companies' broader sustainability agendas. For Tata Motors, the collaboration aligns with its commitment to electric vehicles, CNG platforms, and energy-efficient mobility solutions. For Castrol India, it reinforces its strategy to embed recycled materials into high-performance lubricant products.
