Market Turmoil: Sensex and Nifty Fall as Profit Booking Meets Geopolitical Tensions

Equity Benchmarks Trade Lower Amid Profit Taking and Global Instability

Indian equity benchmarks, the Sensex and Nifty 50, saw a pullback from their daily highs, trading in the red following a strong performance in the preceding session. The decline was attributed to profit booking across sectors, combined with escalating geopolitical tensions in the Middle East.

At 2:26 pm, the Sensex stood at 77,597.51, reflecting a fall of 57.09 points or 0.07%. Concurrently, the Nifty registered a decline of 9.70 points or 0.04%, settling at 24,240.50. In terms of share activity, 1,344 shares were noted as advancing, while 2,463 declined and 149 remained unchanged.

Impact of Geopolitical Tensions on Oil Prices

The prospect of conflict resolution remains distant amid heightened tensions between the United States and Iran. The escalation has led to a surge in global oil prices, driven by fears of prolonged supply disruptions from the Persian Gulf region.

Oil crude saw significant movement after US military strikes targeted Iranian military sites. Brent crude oil traded nearly 2.5% higher at approximately $92 a barrel following an earlier rally of almost 8%. West Texas Intermediate (WTI) was also noted trading above $85, underscoring the global commodity shockwave caused by the regional strife.

President Donald Trump's vow to retaliate against Iran following an Iranian attack on a military base in Jordan further fueled this volatility. These remarks underscored concerns over a longer war and prolonged supply risks, while simultaneously raising concerns about shipping routes through the Red Sea.

Profit Booking Drives Sectoral Weakness

Profit booking remains a significant factor contributing to the market's intraday softness. This activity occurred after the markets had shown positive movement for two consecutive days, following an earlier session where they rose by over 1%.

Sector-wise, while Nifty IT relinquished some of its daily gains, the Realty sector emerged as one of the biggest losers. The dedicated sectors were seen trading under pressure as investors took profits following recent uptrends.

Technical Outlook for Bullish Momentum

Analysts maintain that a specific technical milestone must be achieved before renewed bullish momentum can be confirmed in the stock markets. For Nifty to decisively shift towards a stronger trend, it needs to trade above 24,300.

This level is seen as critical by experts. Crossing this threshold would signify the market's ability to absorb recent sell pressures and gain sustainable upward traction.
