Sensex Slips 59 Points Despite Iran-US Talks; Market Awaits Global Geopolitical De-escalation

The Indian stock market witnessed a subdued session on Tuesday, with both the Sensex and Nifty showing marginal losses. This trend persisted despite reports of ongoing mediation efforts between the United States and Iran aimed at resolving regional tensions.

Sensex dipped by nearly 59 points, settling at 77,650. Meanwhile, the Nifty 50 also declined over 22 points, closing at 24,216. Although major indices faced headwinds, the broader market segments showed some resilience. Nifty Midcap 100 and Nifty Smallcap 100 were observed trading with marginal gains.

Market Performance and Sectoral Trends

The benchmark Sensex saw several stocks lead the losses, including Bajaj Finserv, Axis Bank, Eternal, HDFC Bank, HCL Technologies, M&M, SBI, and Trent, all dropping by nearly 1-2%. Conversely, UltraTech Cement, ICICI Bank, Maruti Suzuki, NTPC, IndiGo, and ITC were among the stocks showing gains of around 1-2% in the market.

Sectorally, trends remained muted across key indices. Nifty Financial Services, Nifty PSU Bank, Nifty IT, and Nifty Private Bank all opened with marginal losses, indicating cautious investor sentiment in certain sectors. Despite this, the overall market breadth remained positive, with NSE registering 1,453 advances against 775 declines, while 147 stocks were unchanged.

Global Geopolitical Dynamics Drive Market Caution

The uncertainty surrounding ongoing international conflicts continues to be a key factor influencing trading sentiment. Reports indicated that mediators received a proposal for a 10-day ceasefire from Iran in an attempt to save the interim deal signed on June 17. This effort is intended to lead toward a lasting agreement to end the conflict.

However, challenges persist despite the diplomatic moves. Yemen's Iran-aligned Houthis announced they would impose a naval blockade on Saudi Arabia on Monday. This development introduces a potential new front against the US in its campaign concerning Iran and escalates threats to global energy supplies and trade beyond the Gulf region.

Oil Prices Fall Amid Mediation Hopes

Oil prices softened following the reports of mediation efforts. Brent crude futures were trading near $88 per barrel, while WTI Crude futures stood at $82 per barrel, dipping below the $90 mark. This dip in oil pricing was registered against a backdrop of geopolitical complexity.

Analyst View: What Lies Ahead for Indian Equities?

VK Vijayakumar, Chief Investment Strategist at Geojit Investments, noted that the near-term market trajectory will be significantly influenced by crude price trends. While the softening of Brent to approximately $88 is a positive indicator, he cautioned that the sheer scale of uncertainty carries an upside risk to crude prices, which could weigh on the markets.

Vijayakumar added that Foreign Portfolio Investment (FPI) selling was not sufficiently significant to impact the market, as it is being easily absorbed by Domestic Institutional Investor (DII) buying. He also highlighted positive domestic news, including good progress in Kharif sowing with a deficiency decline to 6%. Furthermore, dollar inflows through the concessional swap facility have surpassed $20 billion and show a healthy uptrend, which bodes well for the rupee.

Technical Outlook: Nifty Consolidating Near Key Levels

From a technical standpoint, Rajesh Palviya, Head of Research at Axis Direct, stated that Nifty is currently in a consolidation-to-corrective phase as long as it remains below the critical 24,300-24,400 resistance zone. This zone also aligns with its 200-day Exponential Moving Average (EMA).

Palviya provided specific support and resistance levels for the index. The immediate support is set at 24,100, noting that a breach of this level could accelerate a decline towards the psychologically significant 24,000 mark. On the upward side, a decisive move above 24,400 would improve near-term momentum and establish a trajectory toward 24,500-24,600.

The analyst concluded that going forward, crude oil price trends, banking sector earnings, and geopolitical developments will likely dictate market direction. A moderation in oil prices or an easing of regional tensions could serve as the necessary catalyst for sentiment recovery.
