SBI Funds IPO Transforms 13 Employees into Crorepatis as ESOP Haul Hits ₹121 Crore

SBI Funds Management is poised to make a debut in the stock market, translating years of employee dedication into substantial wealth creation. The company’s Initial Public Offering (IPO) has highlighted the significant payoff provided by its Employee Stock Ownership Programme (ESOP). At an issue price of ₹574 per share, senior executives and long-serving employees stand to gain enormous fortunes, underscoring the success of the program introduced back in 2018.

##Key Executives Witness Massive ESOP Windfall

The IPO has created multi-crore fortunes for several senior management members at SBI Funds. Deputy Managing Director Devinder Pal Singh is set to be the biggest beneficiary, with his vested shares alone valued at approximately ₹121 crore based on the prospectus figures. Chief Investment Officer Srinivasan Rama Iyer also commands a massive stake, valued around ₹105 crore.

The wealth generated by these stock awards highlights the depth of commitment required during SBI Funds' growth phase. Other senior executives slated for significant gains include Srinivas Jain (Chief of Strategy and Digital & Technology), whose holdings are worth nearly ₹59 crore. Rajeev Radhakrishnan (Chief Investment Officer – Fixed Income) has a stake valued at around ₹36 crore, while Aparna Nirgude (Chief Risk Officer) is set to benefit with about ₹31 crore.

The benefits extend across the executive ranks, including Vinaya Datar (Chief Compliance Officer and Head of Legal), who holds vested shares worth approximately ₹21 crore. Other executives, such as CFO Inderjeet Ghuliani and Chief Human Resources Officer Rajat Grover, also hold vested stocks exceeding ₹1 crore each at the offer price. Many executives, beyond those with vested shares, hold unvested options that promise further increases in wealth over time.

##Robust IPO Demand Driven by Institutional Interest

The listing benefited from strong institutional interest preceding the open. A day before the issue commenced, SBI Funds raised nearly ₹2,663 crore through anchor investors, including marquee names such as BlackRock and Goldman Sachs. The company also completed a pre-IPO placement totaling around ₹1,880 crore.

Investor demand remained exceptionally high throughout the three-day subscription period (July 14 to July 16). The IPO was subscribed nearly 42 times overall. Qualified institutional buyers (QIB) drove this enthusiasm, with their quota being subscribed approximately 140 times. While non-institutional investor participation reached 22.51 times, the retail category saw a subscription rate of 3.6 times.

##Brokerage Ratings and Structural Advantage Assessed by Analysts

Investment experts have weighed in on the offering, citing both the company's market standing and its structural advantages. Anand Rathi noted that SBI Funds operates as a fee-based asset management business across diverse mandates like mutual funds and specialized investment funds. The brokerage assigned a valuation of 38.1 times earnings to the upper end of the price band and advised investors to subscribe.

Chola Securities highlighted the crucial advantage provided by the parent company, State Bank of India. They pointed out that SBI Funds benefits from the extensive branch network and large customer base of the state-owned bank, especially in cities outside the top 30. The brokerage suggested that the IPO is fairly valued at around 38 times FY26 earnings when compared to listed peers such as HDFC AMC and ICICI Prudential AMC, maintaining a Subscribe rating.

The market should note that this IPO is entirely an offer for sale, meaning existing shareholders are being given the opportunity to crystallize their wealth accumulation through one of the asset management industry's most valuable ESOP programmes, rather than receiving proceeds from the company itself.
