Nikkei Rebounds as Bargain Hunting Fuels Recovery After Steep Weekly Selloff
Japan's benchmark stock market saw a solid rebound on Tuesday as investors returned from a market holiday and aggressively picked up beaten-down stocks. The rally helped recover some of the losses experienced in the previous week, following the index's steepest decline in over a year. The Nikkei 225 advanced 1.25%, reaching 64,945.96 in early trading. Similarly, the broader Topix index gained 1.33%, settling at 3,971.20. These gains arrived despite cautious global sentiment permeating markets worldwide.
Global Cautions vs Domestic Rebound
The domestic rally occurred even as Wall Street closed slightly lower on Monday. This slight downturn was attributed to escalating tensions in the U.S.-Iran conflict, which drove oil prices higher and consequently raised worries over economic growth and inflation.Market participants are now strategically pivoting their focus toward the upcoming second-quarter earnings season. Major U.S. technology firms like Alphabet, Tesla, and Intel are set to release results later this week. Investors are keenly anticipating these updates to gauge the future outlook for artificial intelligence related stocks that have recently faced pressure.
Positive Market Breadth Drives Nikkei Gains
Tuesday's market performance was characterized by strong positive breadth across the index constituents. A significant 196 of the Nikkei’s 225 constituent companies traded higher, with only 28 stocks showing a decline.Analysts noted that the gains on Tuesday primarily reflected a technical rebound following the sharp selloff witnessed previously. However, underlying caution remains prevalent ahead of crucial corporate earnings reports scheduled for both Japan and the United States.
Top Gainers and Laggards in Nikkei Sector
Several companies led the rally among the top performers. Chipmaker Kioxia Holdings surged notably, climbing 5.89%. Cosmetics giant Shiseido also saw strong gains, rising by 5.78%. Heavy machinery manufacturer IHI added 4.14% to its value. The day was not without losses for all stocks. Nintendo was the biggest laggard among the index members, dropping 3.91%. Tech materials supplier Sumco declined by 3.45%, and camera maker Nikon slipped 2.18%.
