Monsoon Deficit Narrows to 11.6% as Rainfall Improves, But Analysts Flag Risk Ahead
Barclays notes that the monsoon rainfall deficit has continued its downward trend, narrowing to 11.6% below the long-period average (LPA) as of August 2. Improved precipitation across both eastern and western regions signals a positive momentum in the current agricultural season. The brokerage noted that the overall pace of monsoon rainfall remains strong, leading to a reduction in cumulative deficit. The central region is reported to be above LPA, while the southern peninsular region has shown a week-on-week decline in its deficit.
Agricultural States Show Significant Recovery
Key agricultural states have seen marked improvements in their rainfall patterns. Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, and most parts of Maharashtra and Karnataka are now within the normal range as per Barclays’ assessment. This improvement in crucial agricultural regions is being closely monitored by market watchers. Rainfall distribution across these key states will remain a critical factor influencing rural demand and overall monsoon performance moving forward.
Kharif Sowing Progress Reaches 81% Coverage
In terms of kharif sowing, crop coverage has shown steady progress up to July 31. The area sown has reached 81% of the normal area, a considerable increase from 71.3% recorded just ten days prior. While the total area sown is still 3.9% lower year-on-year, the gap is reportedly narrowing quickly. Barclays stated that the current level of sowing is commensurate with historical trends typically observed by the end of the first half of the season.
Reservoir Levels Rise Amid Rainfall Gains
Water security indicators have also shown a positive uptick in recent data. Reservoir storage levels increased to 42% of live capacity as of July 30, up from 38% reported the previous week. This rise is supported by heavy rainfall witnessed across central and western India. However, this positive trend places significant focus on the forecast for the upcoming monsoon period.
Risk Alert Issued for Second-Half Monsoon Season
Barclays has issued a cautious note regarding the second half of the monsoon season (August-September). The brokerage highlighted that the IMD expects rainfall during this crucial period to be 'below-normal', defined as less than 94% of the LPA.This impending rainfall uncertainty keeps the performance of the monsoon firmly in focus for agriculture and associated rural demand throughout the remainder of the season.
