Market Momentum Shifts: DIIs Fuel Equity Rally as FII Net Sells Rs 583 Crore
Provisional data for August 20 reveals a dichotomy in institutional investment trends, with domestic investors (DIIs) providing robust support to equity markets while Foreign Institutional Investors (FIIs) registered significant net outflows. The sentiment shift is occurring against a backdrop of global geopolitical uncertainty and stabilizing bond markets.Market Performance Snapshot
The broader Indian market showed positive momentum as the Sensex closed at 77,537.72, marking an increase of 628.04 points or 0.82 percent. The Nifty also gained ground, finishing at 24,231.85, up by 153.55 points or 0.64 percent in the session.
Sectorally, all major indices concluded the day in the green. The Media index saw a strong rise of 2 percent, and the Realty index moved up 1.4 percent. Auto, FMCG, pharma, IT, private bank, and infra sectors all managed gains ranging between 0.4 to 0.8 percent.
Institutional Flows Dominate Day's Trading
The divergence in institutional activity was pronounced on August 20. DIIs were the principal drivers of domestic buying sentiment, investing a substantial Rs 3,538 crore. On the flip side, FIIs recorded net selling for the day, contributing to an outflow worth Rs 583 crore.
Looking at daily trading activity, DIIs invested shares valued at Rs 16,933 crore against sales totaling Rs 13,395 crore. Meanwhile, FII purchased equities worth Rs 11,412 crore but sold shares amounting to Rs 11,995 crore.
Long-Term Foreign and Domestic Investment Trends
While daily activity showed DII strength counterbalancing the outflows from foreign entities, the year-to-date picture highlights persistent pressure from global investors. FIIs have continued as net sellers for the year, having withdrawn approximately Rs 3.40 lakh crore from Indian equities so far this year.
In stark contrast, DII activity continues to provide market ballast. Domestic institutions have invested nearly Rs 5.24 lakh crore into the markets, successfully offsetting a portion of the foreign capital outflows and providing necessary support to domestic price discovery.
Analyst Take: Cautious Optimism Amid Crude Jitters
Religare Broking's SVP, Ajit Mishra, provided context for the market performance, noting that investor sentiment saw an improvement following stabilization in global bond markets. This stability was noted after US Treasury announced measures intended to increase buybacks of long-duration debt, which eased concerns over rapidly rising global yields.
Mishra also pointed out that a stronger rupee and short covering trends further bolstered the recent market recovery. However, he highlighted persistent external risks stemming from elevated Brent crude prices, which remained near $94 per barrel amid geopolitical tensions around the Strait of Hormuz.
Given these prevailing uncertainties and the high commodity prices, Religare Broking recommends maintaining a cautious approach to the index itself. Participants are advised to focus on selective stock-specific opportunities, preferring relatively stronger stocks and sectors while adhering to disciplined risk management.
