Larsen & Toubro Secures Large Order for Automated People Mover System at Dubai's Al Maktoum Airport
Mumbai: Larsen & Toubro Limited, through its Transportation Infrastructure business vertical, has secured a large contract in partnership with Japan's Mitsubishi Heavy Industries (MHI). The consortium is tasked with the design and construction of the Automated People Mover (APM) System for Phase 1 of Al Maktoum International Airport in Dubai.
The project is being developed by Dubai Aviation City Corporation and executed through Dubai Aviation Engineering Projects. The APM system forms a vital part of the airport's multi-phase long-term expansion plan. Upon full development, Al Maktoum International Airport is anticipated to become the world's largest airport, with an annual capacity expected at 260 million passengers and 12 million tonnes of freight.
The scope of work for the MHI-L&T partnership involves the turnkey delivery of a fully integrated APM System. This includes design, construction, supply, testing, commissioning, and ensuring operational readiness across all associated infrastructure and systems.
As part of this Design-and-Build contract, L&T is responsible for the design, procurement, delivery, and integration of critical APM infrastructure and systems. These components include guideways, DC traction substations, power distribution, signalling and telecommunications, onboard communication systems for vehicles, platform screen doors, and depot equipment.
Ramkumar S, Executive Vice President & Head - Transportation Infrastructure at L&T, commented on the achievement, stating that this project showcases the scale and complexity of integrated APM Rail Systems that L&T is uniquely positioned to deliver. He noted that combining MHI's established APM Systems with L&T's extensive experience in integrated systems, supported by its world-class Engineering Designs Centre, enables the company to execute such projects while maintaining a strong focus on safety and quality.
