L&T Secures Major EPC Order from BCGCL for Coal-to-Ammonia Project

Larsen & Toubro (L&T) Energy Hydrocarbon Onshore has secured a significant Engineering, Procurement, and Construction (EPC) order from Bharat Coal Gasification and Chemicals Ltd (BCGCL). The contract involves developing a Coal-to-Ammonium-Nitrate project in Odisha, solidifying L&T's leadership in the Coal-to-Chemicals value chain.

The order, classified as a Lump Sum Turnkey Package-3, is for an Ammonia Synthesis Unit. This initiative significantly strengthens L&T's position in clean syngas-based ammonia synthesis, which is a critical building block in the broader coal-to-chemicals value chain. The resulting Ammonia Plant is designed to enable the downstream manufacture of nitric acid and ammonium nitrate, thereby ensuring high operational efficiency, process reliability, and seamless integration across the facility.

Leveraging its deep domain expertise in fertilizers, gas processing, and chemical EPC, L&T Onshore will deliver an Ammonia Synthesis Unit built for sustained operations, high onstream factors, and stringent safety standards.

The extensive scope of work includes the process license, basic design, detailed engineering, procurement, and construction. The project scope also covers mechanical completion, pre-commissioning, commissioning, sustained load and performance guarantee test runs, overall project management, and final handover of the Ammonia Synthesis Unit and its associated facilities on an LSTK basis with single-point responsibility.

In commenting on the successful order win, Mr Subramanian Sarma, Deputy Managing Director & President - L&T, stated that "Gasification-based downstream chemical infrastructure is central to India's self-reliance agenda. This significant order reinforces L&T's role as a trusted EPC partner for technologically complex and nationally important projects." He added that the development of indigenous ammonia capacity through coal-based routes supports supply resilience and downstream industrial ecosystems.

Mr E S Sathyanarayanan, Senior Vice President & Head of L&T Onshore and Member of L&T's Executive Committee, highlighted that "The ammonia plant is a critical component of the coal-to-chemicals value chain. Our proven capabilities in executing ammonia and fertilizer plants enable the efficient delivery of such technology-intensive assets, ensuring consistent product quality, operational reliability and long-term performance."

L&T Energy Hydrocarbon Onshore is noted as one of India's largest EPC businesses, providing comprehensive Lump Sum Turnkey solutions across upstream, midstream, and downstream hydrocarbon sectors. The company possesses a strong execution track record, having delivered refinery expansions, petrochemical complexes, gas processing plants, fertilizer plants, LNG terminals, and cross-country pipelines.
